Calexa begins to understand her forgotten past

Despite her self-imposed isolation among the deceased, Calexa’s ability to see spirits and the memories she receives from them guarantees she’ll never be alone. The only living people she interacts with are Kelner, the cemetery’s cantankerous caretaker, and Lucinda Cameron, an elderly woman who lives in an old Victorian house across the street. With their friendship, Calexa has regained a link to the world beyond tombstones and mausoleums.

Until the night she witnesses a murder that shatters her life: a life now under a police microscope, as their investigation threatens to uncover Calexa’s true identity…

The book is illustrated by Don Kramer.

Эксмо have also published the first two novels in the series, PLANESRUNNER and BE MY ENEMY — as Странник между мирами and Будь моим врагом, respectively.

McDonald-Everness1&2RUS-Blog

The novel (and series) is published in the US by Pyr Books and UK by Jo Fletcher Books. Here’s the English-language synopsis for the third novel…

Everett is one step closer to finding his dad. But Charlotte Villiers is on his tail and now she’s not the only one looking for the Infundibulum, the key to the multiverse.

When Everett Singh’s dad was randomly sent to one of the many parallel worlds in the multiverse, Everett discovered a way to find him on the quarantined planet E1, home of the terrifying Nahn. Now he, along with the crew of the airship Everness, has followed a trail to the next world and his father.

But this is a world where dinosaurs have had sixty-five million years to evolve, where death is the key to the throne and where the Empress of the Sun has a plan to wipe out every other creature on her planet and then take her conquest to Earth. All she needs is Everett’s infundibulum…

McDonald-E3-EmpressOfTheSun-Blog

The Everness series has been spectacularly well-reviewed. Here’s just a handful of reviews EMPRESS OF THE SUN has received…

‘The marvelous Everness series takes readers to a world with highly evolved dinosaurs in this third voyage through parallel universes… McDonald lets his imagination run rampant without abandoning credibility, tackling real scientific concepts such as confirmation bias, a feature lacking in far too much science fiction. Fans might wish for more focus on the original Everett, but eventually, the three storylines weave themselves together nicely, setting up another sequel with hints of forthcoming romance. Endlessly fascinating and fun.’ — Kirkus (Starred Review)

‘YA or not, the Everness series may be the most enjoyable ongoing series that SF currently has to offer.’ — Locus (Jan.2014)

‘It’s no exaggeration when I say these books in the Everness series just seem to get better and better. The adventure that started with PLANESRUNNER only intensified with BE MY ENEMY, and now the third installment has taken things even further… The author sure pulled out all the stops with this one. Blown, my mind is… To sum it up, this book just does a fantastic job all around at fleshing out everyone. As someone who places such high importance on characters, I couldn’t be happier… Action, adventure, and rollicking good fun! EMPRESS OF THE SUN has all of that. And of all the books so far, I also have to say this one was the most humorous. There are some sections of dialogue that just made me laugh out loud… The crew of the Everness still has much to do, and there are still so many worlds out there to explore. I can’t wait to see where they will go next.’ — Bibliosanctum

EMPRESS OF THE SUN revels in its pulp adventure milieu… McDonald has created an incredibly “storyable” universe for his characters to have their adventures in, and he keeps those adventures coming fast and furious… Between the adventures, the pacing, the characters, and the narrative arcs, there’s a lot to enjoy about this book and the overall series.’ — Strange Horizons

Naomi Foyle’s ASTRA Out Today in the US

FoyleN-AstraUK-Blog

Today, Quercus published Naomi Foyle‘s ASTRA in the US in hardcover. The first novel in the author’s Gaia Chronicles, here is the synopsis…

Like every child in Is-Land, all Astra Ordott wants is to have her Security Shot, do her National Service and defend her Gaian homeland from Non-Lander “infiltrators.” But when one of her Shelter mothers, the formidable Dr Hokma Blesser, tells her the shot will limit her chances of becoming a scientist and offers her an alternative, Astra agrees to her plan.

When the orphaned Lil arrives to share Astra’s home, Astra is torn between jealousy and fascination. Lil’s father taught her some alarming ideas about Is-Land and the world, but when she pushes Astra too far, the heartache that results goes far beyond the loss of a friend.

If she is to survive, Astra must learn to deal with devastating truths about Is-Land, Non-Land and the secret web of adult relationships that surrounds her.

ASTRA and its sequel, ROOK SONG, are published in the UK by Jo Fletcher Books. The third novel in the series, THE BLOOD OF THE HOOPOE, is due to be published in March 2016 (more details to come). Jo Fletcher Books also publishes Foyle’s SEOUL SURVIVORS.

‘An unusual and appealing novel…’  —  Strange Horizons on ASTRA

‘The mastery with which Foyle creates her world is astounding. The deft handling that brings Astra to life is breathtaking – and her journey is a heartbreaking thing, despite the fact that it has seemingly only just begun. If this book is any indication at all of what to expect from her, then I can say with pretty firm certainty that Naomi Foyle is a writer who’s absolutely worth watching out for.’  —  Over the Effing Rainbow on ASTRA

‘A beautiful story, unique and daring, which serves as a solid foundation for everything else to come.’  —  Bibliosanctum on ASTRA

‘Offering plenty of twists and surprises, ROOK SONG outdoes its predecessor with a more developed story and plenty of conspiracies that pull the reader in. Book one was a comment on how society should live to protect the planet, book two is a comment on how people should prevent international conflict and wars. We can only wait with bated breath to see what book three will campaign for.’  —  Starburst on ROOK SONG

Ian McDonald’s PLANESRUNNER Available in Hungary

McDonald-E1-PlanesrunnerHU-Blog

Ian McDonald‘s first YA novel, PLANESRUNNER, is available in Hungary! It is the first novel in the Everness series — a briskly-paced, action-packed, dimension-hopping science fiction adventure. Published by Gabo as SÍKVÁNDOR, here’s the synopsis…

PLANESRUNNER is published in the US by Pyr Book and in the UK by Jo Fletcher Books — both also publish the sequels, BE MY ENEMY and EMPRESS OF THE SUN. Here’s the English-language synopsis…

There is not just one you, there are many yous. We’re part of a multiplicity of universes in parallel dimensions – and Everett Singh’s dad has found a way in.

But he’s been kidnapped, and now it is as though Everett’s dad never existed. Yet there is one clue for his son to follow, a mysterious app: the Infundibulum.

The app is a map, not just to the Ten Known Worlds, but to the entire multiverse – and there are those who want to get their hands on it very badly. If Everett’s going to keep it safe and rescue his dad, he’s going to need friends: like Captain Anastasia Sixmith, her adopted daughter and the crew of the airship Everness.

The series has been critically-acclaimed by many journalists, reviewers and Ian’s peers. All three books are out now in the UK and US. PLANESRUNNER has also been published in France by Gallimard Jeunesse, and in Russia by Эксмо.

Two New Simon R. Green Novels

At the end of 2014 and the beginning of this year, Jo Fletcher Books started releasing Simon R. Green‘s back-catalogue in the UK as eBooks. Today, we can share the information about the two latest additions: PROPERTY OF A LADY FAIRE and TALES FROM THE NIGHTSIDE.GreenSR-SH8-PropertyOfALadyFayreUKe-BlogPROPERTY OF A LADY FAIRE is the eighth book in Simon’s bestselling Secret Histories series. Here’s the synopsis…

Call me Drood, Eddie Drood. Some know me as Shaman Bond and most simply don’t want to know me at all. For centuries, my family has been keeping the things that lurk on the darker side of existence as far away as possible from humans like you, without you even knowing we’re there.

Unfortunately for us, not everybody appreciates what we Droods do. Recently, I personally managed to survive yet another attempt on my life, but the rest of my relatives weren’t so lucky. My parents are missing in action. My grandfather has been murdered. And the future of my family lies in the iron grasp of the Lady Faire, an incredibly seductive, mysterious, and powerful being.

She possesses an ancient object that can save them. I have to steal it from her. Easy enough to say, difficult — and very, very dangerous — to do…

GreenSR-N13-TalesFromTheNightsideUKe-BlogTALES FROM THE NIGHTSIDE is a collection of short stories set in Simon’s New York Times-bestselling Nightside urban fantasy series…

Welcome to the Nightside. It’s the secret heart of London, beating to its own rhythm, pumping lifeblood through the veins of its streets and alleys hidden in eternal darkness, where creatures of the night congregate and where the sun is afraid to shine. It’s the place to go if you’re looking to indulge the darker side of your nature—and to hell with the consequences.

Tales from the Nightside presents ten macabre mysteries that shine a dim beam into the neighborhood’s darkest corners to reveal things that should never come to light. Take a walk with such deadly and dangerous denizens of the Nightside as Razor Eddie, Dead Boy, and Larry Oblivion as they encounter things even more inhuman and inhumane than they are. And join John Taylor, the PI with a knack for finding lost things, as he confronts Sir Francis Varney, King of the Vampires, in a never-before-published novella-length adventure.

There may be nothing to be afraid of in the dark, but there’s plenty to be afraid of in the Nightside…

Both of these titles are available now. Simon is also the author of, most recently, THE DARK SIDE OF THE ROAD, which was published in the US last week by Severn House, who also published the novel in the UK.

Zeno represents Simon R. Green in the UK and Commonwealth, on behalf of the JABberwocky Literary Agency in New York.

Naomi Foyle Interviewed by Writers Forum

Foyle-WFInterview-May2015

In the May issue of Writers Forum, Naomi Foyle has been interviewed about her novels and writing (you can read the interview, above, by clicking on the image).

To coincide with the interview, Naomi has written an article for the Jo Fletcher Books blog, which you can read here.

Naomi is the author of the critically-acclaimed SEOUL SURVIVORS, ASTRA and ROOK SONG. She is published in the UK and US by Jo Fletcher Books. Here’s the synopsis for ROOK SONG, the second novel in her Gaia Chronicles sci-fi series…

Astra Ordott is in exile. Evicted from Is-Land for a crime she cannot regret, she has found work in an ancient fortress in Non-Land: headquarters of the Council of New Continents, the global body charged with providing humanitarian aid to the inhabitants of this toxic refugee camp.

Recovering from a disorienting course of Memory Pacification Treatment, Astra struggles to focus on her overriding goals – to find her Code father and avenge the death of her Shelter mother, Hokma.

But can the CONC compound director, the ambiguous Major Thames, protect her from the hawk-eyed attentions of her old enemies? And who in this world of competing agendas can she trust? The deeper Astra ventures into this new world, the more she realises her true quest may be to find herself.

Here’s just a small sample of the great reviews Naomi’s novels have received…

‘Foyle’s strengths are her impeccable plotting, her rendering of a futuristic Seoul and the depiction of Sydney Travers’ gradual inveiglement in the nightmare of Dr Kim’s cloning experiment.’ — Guardian on SEOUL SURVIVORS

‘It’s a beautiful story, unique and daring, which serves as a solid foundation for everything else to come.’ — Bibliosanctum on ASTRA

‘An enthralling and absorbing read… Offering plenty of twists and surprises, ROOK SONG outdoes its predecessor with a more developed story and plenty of conspiracies that pull the reader in. New Lavie Tidhar and Will Elliott Out Now in US

Tidhar-ViolentCenturyUS-Blog

The latest novels by Lavie Tidhar and Will Elliott are published today in the US.

First up, Lavie Tidhar’s critically-acclaimed alternative history/super-hero novel, THE VIOLENT CENTURY is published by Thomas Dunne (above). Here’s the synopsis…

They never meant to be heroes.

For seventy years they guarded the British Empire. Oblivion and Fogg, inseparable friends, bound together by a shared fate. Until one night in Berlin, in the aftermath of the Second World War, and a secret that tore them apart.  But there must always be an account… and the past has a habit of catching up to the present.

Now, recalled to the Retirement Bureau from which no one can retire, Fogg and Oblivion must face up to a past of terrible war and unacknowledged heroism – a life of dusty corridors and secret rooms, of furtive meetings and blood-stained fields – to answer one last, impossible question:

What makes a hero?

THE VIOLENT CENTURY is published in the UK by Hodder, it is also available as a limited edition from PS Publishing. Lavie’s works have been lavished with praise from all quarters, including being described as ‘an emerging master’ (Locus), ‘Young, ambitious, skilled and original’ (Christopher Priest) and ‘remarkable and ambitious’ (China Mieville).

Lavie’s latest novel, A MAN LIES DREAMING, was also published in the UK by Hodder in October 2014 (paperback due out in March), also to a tsunami of critical acclaim.

Secondly, Will Elliott’s SHADOW is published by Tor Books. The second novel in the author’s Pendulum Trilogy, it follows THE PILGRIMS. Here’s the synopsis…

Eric Albright was a luckless journalist living in London. He had a so-so life… until the day he opened a battered red door that appeared on the graffiti-covered wall of a local bridge, and entered Levaal, a magical world between worlds. A place populated by power damaged mages, stone giants, pit devils—and dragons, Levaal’s possible creators, who are imprisoned in a sky prison. It is also where the mad Lord Vous rules with an iron fist and is busy working on a scheme to turn himself into a god. Vous has been defeated so far because Levaal has been contained by the great Wall at World’s End.

But the Wall at World’s End has been brought down, war is coming to the land, and Eric and his newfound friends are caught in the thick of it. They are forced to flee from the Tormentors, dreadful creatures that have poured through the breach, and there are rumors that one of the great dragons has escaped its sky prison.

Worse yet, Vous’s journey to godhood is almost complete, and a mysterious being called Shadow (who is not but looks remarkably like Eric) is wandering Levaal with great power but no purpose it yet understands.

The end might be coming faster than anyone thinks.

You can read an excerpt from SHADOW here. SHADOW and THE PILGRIMS, as well as WORLD’S END, were published in the UK by Jo Fletcher Books. The trilogy has also been released as an eBook bundle.

Also published by Jo Fletcher Books tomorrow are ROOK SONG and the mass market paperback of ASTRA by Naomi Foyle. The second and first novels in the Gaia Chronicles, respectively, here is the synopsis for ROOK SONG

Here are couple of the great reviews for ASTRA

‘Shocking though it might be in some respects, ASTRA certainly provides food for thought… the story quickly becomes engrossing. The ending is abrupt, but it makes you crave the second instalment of the Gaia ChroniclesASTRA will certainly not be everyone’s cup of tea, but personally I am looking forwards to the next book with curiosity and excitement.’ — Starburst Magazine

ASTRA is just as thought-provoking as SEOUL SURVIVORS… I enjoyed ASTRA immensely. The novel’s plot is fascinating, with an intricate web of relationships between Astra and those around them and the adults amongst themselves and some compelling political shenanigans going on in the background, all of it set down in Foyle’s smooth and flowing writing style.’ — Fantastical Librarian
