Chris Speyer

Chris Speyer began writing for the theatre soon after his move to the UK from Sydney, where he trained in stage design at the National Institute of Dramatic Art. He has written and directed dozens of plays and musicals for regional theatres and touring companies in places as far apart as London and Newcastle, Lancaster and Llandrindod Wells, Berwick-on-Tweed and Great Torrington, and his work has been performed at international festivals in Canada, the US and UK. Most of Chris’s writing has been for children and young people, with the occasional foray into the adult world.

Chris’s first novel for young people, DEVIL’S ROCK (Bloomsbury) was published in 2009, and was followed by FOREST OF LIES in 2013 (short listed for the Rubery International Book Award 2016).

Chris is the words half of Music & Words. Together with his musical colleague Alan Boxer he runs song-writing and music theatre programmes for children in Devon schools.

Chris lives a double life. He is a Fellow of the Craft Potters’ Association and, when not writing, he can be found in his studio happily getting his hands dirty in the clay.
