UK Release Date: HURRICANE FEVER by Tobias Buckell

Buckell-HurricaneFeverUK-BlogToday, Del Rey UK publish Tobias Buckell‘s highly-anticipated HURRICANE FEVER, the follow-up to ARCTIC RISING. A thrilling return to Buckell’s near-future Earth, it offers an expertly-crafted blend of James Bond-meets-Michael Crichton action and adventure. Here is the synopsis…

When a freelance spy is yanked out of comfortable retirement aboard his boat following the death of a friend, he stumbles upon a deadly terrorist plot to use a private space delivery platform in Barbados to launch a deadly genetic virus.

As one of the largest hurricanes to hit the Caribbean sweeps through the area, one man must battle the world’s deadliest natural phenomenon, mercenaries and a deadly biological agent, to save the world.

Can’t get to a bookstore, yet? Well, to whet your appetite, Tor.com have helpfully published an excerpt from HURRICANE FEVER. Below are a couple of early reviews…

‘A stormy, aptly named thriller set in the Caribbean of the near future… The stakes are higher than one might expect, and even the specter of racism comes into play. Buckell has written a smart and well-constructed tale that’s filled with excitement and the flavor of the Caribbean isles… So don’t wait for a dark and stormy night to read this novel; you’ll have plenty of fun.’ — Kirkus, Starred Review

‘Buckell solidly links the political and the personal, both exemplified by subtle race-related interactions (for instance, at upper-crust parties, Roo is frequently mistaken for a servant). The scenes of sailing and spying action move quickly, and the climax, set on a supersized satellite-launching cannon, is one white cat shy of a Bond movie.’ — Publishers Weekly

HURRICANE FEVER is published in the US by Tor Books, also this week.

Zeno represents Tobias Buckell in the UK and Commonwealth, on behalf of the JABberwocky Literary Agency in New York.

Hodder-BS5-ReturnOfDiscontinuedManUK-Blog

Above is the UK cover for Mark Hodder‘s latest steampunk adventure! THE RETURN OF THE DISCONTINUED MAN is published in the UK by Del Rey UK, on August 7th, 2014. Here’s the synopsis…

Spring Heeled Jack is jumping back!

It’s 9 p.m. on February 15, 1860, and Charles Babbage, the British Empire’s most brilliant scientist, performs an experiment. Within moments, blood red snow falls from the sky and Spring Heeled Jack pops out of thin air in London’s Leicester Square. Though utterly disoriented and apparently insane, the strange creature is intent on one thing: hunting Sir Richard Francis Burton!

Spring Heeled Jack isn’t alone in his mental confusion. Burton can hardly function; he’s experiencing one hallucination after another – visions of parallel realities and future history. Someone, or something, is trying to tell him about … what?

When the revelation comes, it sends Burton and his companions on an expedition even the great explorer could never have imagined – a voyage through time itself into a twisted future where steam technology has made a resurgence and a despotic intelligence rules over the British Empire!

THE RETURN OF THE DISCONTINUED MAN is the author’s fifth novel in the Burton & Swinburne series, following: THE STRANGE AFFAIR OF SPRING-HEELED JACKTHE CURIOUS CASE OF THE CLOCKWORK MANEXPEDITION TO THE MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON and THE SECRET OF ABDU EL YEZDI. Sidewise Award Nomination for Mark Hodder!

Hodder-BS4-SecretAbduElYezdiUK-BlogWe are delighted to report that Mark Hodder‘s THE SECRET OF ABDU EL YEZDI has been nominated for a 2013 Sidewise Award!

The Awards, presented in recognition of excellence in alternate history, are named after Murray Leinster’s 1934 short story ‘Sidewise in Time’. Each year, there are two categories, Long- and Short-Form, and Mark’s novel has been nominated in the long-form category. The winners in the two categories will be announced at Loncon 3, in London, on August 14th, 2014.

This is the second year in a row in which a Zeno client has been nominated for a Sidewise Award! Last year, Ian R. MacLeod‘s WAKE UP AND DREAM won in the long-form category, too. Ian also won twice for THE SUMMER ISLES – in 1999 for the original short story, and in 2006 for the full-length version. Let us hope that Mark takes home the prize this year!

THE SECRET OF ABDU EL YEZDI, the latest novel in the author’s popular Burton & Swinburne Adventures series, was published in the UK by Del Rey, and in the US by Pyr Books. Here is the synopsis…

Having successfully discovered the source of the Nile, Captain Richard Francis Burton returns to London expecting to marry his fiancé, Isabel Arundell, and be awarded the consulship of Damascus. However, when he’s unexpectedly knighted by King George V, his plans go awry. The monarch requires an agent to investigate a sequence of disappearances, and Burton, whether he likes it or not, is the man for the job.

Engineering and medical luminaries – such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Florence Nightingale – are among the missing, but the most significant absence is that of Abdu El Yezdi, an inhabitant of the Afterlife who, in the two decades since the assassination of Queen Victoria, has been Prime Minister Disraeli’s most trusted advisor.

The search for the missing ghost soon becomes the least of the explorer’s concerns, for it quickly becomes apparent that he himself is at the centre of increasingly bizarre and interconnected events, and that someone – or something – is intent not only on meddling with history, but also on harming the people Burton values the most.

Mark is currently working on the next novel in the series.

Publication Day – E.J. Swift’s CATAVEIRO

Swift-Cataveiro-UK-BlogThe wait is finally over! E.J. Swift‘s CATAVEIRO, the sequel to her critically-acclaimed debut, OSIRIS, is published today by Del Rey UK! The novel is due to be published sometime later this year by Night Shade Books. Here is the synopsis…

An intense, politically engaged dystopian thriller.

A shipwreck.

And one lone survivor.

For political exile Taeo Ybanez, this could be his ticket home. Relations between the Antarcticans and the Patagonians are worse than ever, and to be caught on the wrong side could prove deadly.

For pilot and cartographer Romana Callejas, the presence of the mysterious stranger is one more thing in the way of her saving her mother from a deadly disease.

All roads lead to Cataveiro, the city of fate and fortune, where their destinies will become intertwined and their futures cemented for ever…

OSIRIS was a critical success when it was first released in the US in 2012 and the UK in 2013. Here’s just a fraction of the praise that has been lavished on Swift’s novel and writing…

‘Marvelously well done. A glittering first novel: a kind of flooded Gormenghast treated with the alienated polish of DeLillo’s Cosmopolis. The result is a gripping novel, beautiful, politically engaged and wholly accomplished. Swift is a ridiculously talented writer… the fact that it’s her first novel is belied by how accomplished and well-written it is.’  —  Adam Roberts

‘At a time when writing the far future novels is harder and harder Swift does it with style, brains and heart. OSIRIS is a fine mix of mystery and apocalyptic intrigue on a human scale.’  —  Richard Kadrey (author of Sandman Slim)

‘With a plot as slick and tangled as drifted seaweed and phrases like ‘an empty foyer that smelled of decomposing ideas,’ this is a terrific debut. Grade A  —  Cleveland Plain Dealer

‘Swift’s first novel, with its brilliant near-future vision of an ecologically and socially devastated world and characters who resonate with life and passion, marks her as an author to watch.’  —  Library Journal

‘… Swift’s writing is exceptional, vivid and compelling… I found OSIRIS to be a novel that deserves to be read. Swift’s talent as a writer can’t be questioned, and it’s clear to me that there exists an intent behind her work. It lends a depth that helped me persevere, not only to finish, but to anticipate the sequel. I’m hopeful that other patient readers will take the time to find the beauty in it that I ultimately did.’  —  Staffer’s Book Review

In case you’ve missed our previous coverage of the novel (or been living under a rock), here is the synopsis…

Nobody leaves Osiris.

Adelaide Rechnov – Wealthy socialite and granddaughter of the Architect, she spends her time in pointless luxury, rebelling against her family in a series of jaded social extravagances and scandals until her twin brother disappears in mysterious circumstances.

Vikram Bai – He lives in the Western Quarter, home to the poor descendants of storm refugees and effectively quarantined from the wealthy elite. His people live with cold and starvation, but the coming brutal winter promises civil unrest, and a return to the riots of previous years.

And, also, here is some of the great critical response OSIRIS has enjoyed…

‘A fantastic blend of world-building, excellent storytelling and complex characters… An engrossing story from start to finish… Osiris would still be good if all it had was world-building, but it offers so much more by way of plot and storytelling. The thrust of the narrative is the motivation of the characters… forces readers to ask themselves what it would take to spur them to action. Now combine this with the other interesting elements of the book like political intrigue, subterfuge, the way the story is told from alternating viewpoints… and you can see why OSIRIS shines. It’s that kind of impressive storytelling that makes OSIRIS hard to put down, and when you have to put it down, something that you remain eager to pick up again.’  —  SF Signal

‘What a bare summary of the novel’s premise obscures is the amount of space Swift creates for her protagonists to simply live in their world and experience it for us – in other words, how textured the novel is. The world-building has a playfully oceanic flavor throughout… but is most compelling when it is sketching out the psychology of Osiris’ citizens. Small episodes, such as an interlude on a freshwater iceberg during which Vikram muses that the slap of waves must be what land sounds like, or the “ground dreams” experienced by many citizens, underline that the sea here is all-encompassing: everything comes from it and returns to it. It’s the sea that catches the city’s ghosts, and the sea that gives the city’s criminal justice system its cues, from the underwater prisons to the official method of execution… Swift demonstrates a much more sophisticated control of pace and tone, an ability to rapidly shift gears within scenes, and a willingness to undercut one scene with another: most notably, the prologue removes ambiguity from one of the major questions facing the protagonists and requires Swift to show one character in particular as much more obsessive and less sympathetic than would otherwise be the case. In the end it’s that choice, perhaps, more than anything else in this nuanced, intriguing, occasionally frustrating book, that makes me think Night Shade have found another worthy writer…’  —  LA Review of Books

Reviews Round-Up #4… Mark Hodder

redsundelreyWith the recent release of Mark Hodder’s latest novel, A RED SUN ALSO RISES (Del Rey UK), a great many blogs have been praising the author’s ability to surprise and defy expectations, and readers have been beguiled by Hodder’s (sometimes twisted!) imagination and excellent prose.

For example, the Eloquent Page:

‘It struck me that this novel positively revels in the unexpected. Each time I thought I had an inkling about where the plot was going next, my suspicions proved to be entirely incorrect. I do like when a book defies my preconceived notions and takes me somewhere unexpected. I’ve not read any of Mark Hodder’s other novels, but based on my experience with this one I’ll have to remedy that situation quick smart.’

SF Signal referred to the novel as ‘vivid and interesting… [with] an enthusiastic audacity’; SFF World has described it as a ‘cracking planetary romance’. Little Red Reviewer thought ‘the pacing is spot on, the characters have hidden depths, the end is mad-cap in a way only Hodder can do, and… the aliens are incredible.’ The Speculative Scotsman has referred to the novel’s setting as ‘deeply weird but unambiguously wonderful’, with a ‘curious sort of beauty’. Stefan Raets, who is more familiar with Hodder’s work, and writing for Tor.com, said A RED SUN ALSO RISES, with its ‘the grin-inducing Hemingway-by-way-of-Chtulhu title… [is] pleasingly weird, but more importantly, it’s also quite good’. Raets continues, describing this ‘incredibly entertaining, fast-paced page turner’ thus:

‘Imagine if Jasper Fforde and a late-career Philip K. Dick read Brian Aldiss’ Helliconia trilogy and decided to try something similar, but, you know, weird it up a bit? … This strange, surprising novel combines elements of steampunk and planetary adventure in ways I just hadn’t seen done before, and that alone makes it more than worth a look.’
