The Citadel of Weeping Pearls was a great wonder; a perfect meld between cutting edge technology and esoteric sciences. Thirty years ago, threatened by an invading fleet from the Dai Viet Empire, the Citadel disappeared and was never seen again. But now the Dai Viet Empire itself is under siege, on the verge of a war against an enemy that turns their own mindships against them; and the Empress, who once gave the order to raze the Citadel, is in desperate needs of its weapons. Meanwhile, on a small isolated space station, an engineer obsessed with the past works on a machine that will send her thirty years back, to the height of the Citadel’s power. But the Citadel’s disappearance still extends chains of grief and regrets all the way into the fraught atmosphere of the Imperial Court; and this casual summoning of the past might have world-shattering consequences…

THE ELFIN SHIP, the first novel in James P. Blaylock‘s Balumnia series, is also on sale in the US and Canada, only $1.99. Published by JABberwocky, here’s the synopsis…

A trilogy sets sail with a novel that’s charming, light-hearted and funny… Feels a little like The Hobbit or The Wind in the Willows” (Fantasy Literature).

James P. Blaylock’s debut novel The Elfin Ship has become a classic of whimsical fantasy. With echoes of Kenneth Graham and Mark Twain, it’s a gentle, eccentric, and hilarious novel that will delight readers of all ages.

Trading with the elves used to be so simple. Every year Master Cheeser Jonathan Bing would send his very best cheeses downriver to traders who would eventually return with Elfin wonders for the people of Twombly Town.

But no more…

First, the trading post at Willowood Station was mysteriously destroyed. Then, a magical elfin airship began making forays overhead. Something was definitely amiss.

So Jonathan set off downriver to deliver the cheeses himself, accompanied by the amazing Professor Wurzle, the irrepressible Dooly, and his faithful dog Ahab. It would have been such a pleasant trip, if not for the weeping skeleton, mad goblins, magic coins, an evil dwarf, a cloak of invisibility — and a watch that stopped time.

If only the return trip were so simple.

Jim’s latest novel is BENEATH LONDON, the fourth book in his fan-favourite Langdon St. Ives steampunk series, published by Titan Books.

cobley-sk1-shadowkingsjab2SHADOWKINGS is the first novel in Michael Cobley’s series of the same name. Here’s the synopsis…

For one thousand bright and fortunate years the Khatrimantine Empire had guaranteed peace and benevolence. Then came the vast hordes of the Mogaun, driven by an evil deity, the Lord of Twilight, corrupter and devourer.

The unprepared Khatrimantine armies could not stand against the brutal might of the invaders, not even with the help of the Empire’s spirit/magical guardians. Yet at the very pinnacle of his triumph, the Lord of Twilight made a fatal mistake, shattering his essence into five parts: five lost souls destined to become the Shadowkings.

Now, sixteen years after the invasion, Mogaun warlords and petty despots squabble amid the ruins. Yet ancient powers are stirring and the Empire’s last valiant defenders are gathering their strength, hoping that one decisive strike can reverse their long, bleak decline. But the forces of Night know well the dance of might, and match them step for step.

The other two novels in the series, SHADOWGOD and SHADOWMASQUE, are also available.

‘There is plenty here to keep any fans of high fantasy happy. The familiar elements are here, but don’t worry about them feeling borrowed or contrived. Cobley has presented his own fantasy world and characters, well rounded, fully explored and absorbing.’ Eternal Night

‘… unconventional high fantasy trilogy… [Cobley] has taken traditional sword and sorcery to some new and perhaps uncomfortable places… an unusually dark and claustrophobic piece of work…’ Infinity Plus

Michael’s latest novel is ANCESTRAL MACHINES, a fourth (stand-alone) novel set in his Humanity’s Fire universe. It is published by Orbit Books.

James P. Blaylock’s Complete BALUMNIA Trilogy Now Available via Audible!

Blaylock-BalumniaTrilogyAUD-Blog

We’re delighted to report that all three books in James P. Blaylock‘s Balumnia Trilogy (sometimes known as the Cheeser Trilogy) are available as audiobooks. Published by Audible, they are a great early, somewhat whimsical fantasy story by one of the Fathers of Steampunk. Philip K. Dick described this series as offering ‘A magical world, magically presented… having journeyed there, you will not wish to leave, nor ever to forget.’

We reported a little while ago that the first book, THE ELFIN SHIP, was available, but Audible has now released the final two. Here are the details…

The trilogy, while out of print for some time, was recently published as eBooks, too: in the UK, they are available through the Gollancz SF Gateway; for the US market, they are available via the JABberwocky eBook Program – along with many other titles from Jim’s great backlist.

We are also happy to tease the fact that we will be revealing the cover for Jim’s next Langdon St. Ives novel tomorrow! So, be sure to check back for that!

Three New James P. Blaylock Audiobooks!

Blaylock-NewAudible20140505-Blog

Three more novels from James P. Blaylock‘s excellent backlist are now available as audiobooks! Published by Audible, we have a mixture of suspense, thriller, and also the first in Jim’s beloved Balumnia fantasy trilogy…

All three of these titles are also available as eBooks from the JABberwocky eBook Program (US) and the Gollancz SF Gateway (UK). Here’s a just a small selection of praise for these three novels…

‘Blaylock’s contemporary fantasy thriller features an intriguing and convincing reluctant hero, amiable cartoonist Calvin Bryson… The plot line begins to sound familiar when Bryson falls for a childhood friend, but as the Knights and their enemies battle for control of the veil, Blaylock… bolsters the predictable climax with solid prose, summing to an enjoyable read.’ — Publishers Weekly on THE KNIGHTS OF THE CORNERSTONE

‘This story of good and evil siblings examines how we all learn to live with who we are, and does so through supple writing and a tense and carefully executed plot… Blaylock combines the supernatural with a deep understanding of contemporary California and human nature, producing a book with appeal for both fantasy fans and readers of realistic fiction.’ — Publishers Weekly on WINTER TIDES

‘A magical world, magically presented… having journeyed there, you will not wish to leave, nor ever to forget.’Philip K. Dick on THE ELFIN SHIP

Trading with the elves used to be so simple. Every year Master Cheeser Jonathan Bing would send his very best cheeses downriver to traders who would eventually return with Elfin wonders for the people of Twombly Town. But no more First the trading post at Willowood Station was mysteriously destroyed. Then a magical elfin airship began making forays overhead; Jonathan knew something was definitely amiss. It would have been a pleasant trip, if not for the weeping skeleton, mad goblins, magic coins, an evil dwarf, a cloak of invisibility – and a watch that stopped time. However, the return trip would not be so simple.

THIRTEEN PHANTASMS is a collection of short stories that shows Blaylock at his very best. We really can’t recommend this enough – for fans of Blaylock and the short story form.

The first short story collection from Philip K. Dick Award-winning author James Blaylock features sixteen thought-provoking forays into the fantastic-from a tale of alien influence on an ordinary neighbourhood to the story of one man’s self-destructive obsession with a dragon.

Both of these great titles will be $2.99 for a limited period only (the end of November) – a great way to try James’s beloved first fantasy series and his critically-acclaimed short fiction.
