Campbell-LFBtF5-LeviathanUK-Blog

Above is the cover for LEVIATHAN, the fifth novel in Jack Campbell‘s Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier series. The novel is due to be published by Titan Books in the UK on May 5th, 2015. Here is the synopsis…

Two Syndicate World star systems have fallen prey to a mysterious fleet of warships—a fleet controlled entirely by artificial intelligence—that is now targeting Alliance space. The warships are no mystery to Geary. They were developed by his government to ensure security, but malfunctioned. If the Syndics learn the truth, the war with the Alliance will resume with a vengeance.

As the government attempts to conceal the existence of the A.I. warships—and its role in their creation—Geary pursues them, treading a fine line between mutiny and obedience. But it soon becomes clear that his fleet is no match for the firepower of the machine-piloted armada.

With the help of the Dancer species of aliens, Geary has tracked the A.I. ships to their secret base in the supposedly mythical Unity Alternate star system where his fleet, the last hope of the Alliance’s future, will end the conflict at any cost.

Titan Books also publish the first four books in the series in the UK: DREADNAUGHT, INVINCIBLE, GUARDIAN and STEADFAST (covers below). Titan also published Campbell’s other best-selling Lost Fleet series in the UK.

UK Cover & Details for Marie Brennan’s THE VOYAGE OF THE BASILISK

BrennanM-LT3-VoyageOfTheBasiliskUK-Blog

Marie Brennan‘s third Memoir of Lady Trent novel, THE VOYAGE OF THE BASILISK, is due to be published in the UK by Titan Books on March 27th, 2015.

Above you can see the rather fine cover, and here is the synopsis…

Devoted readers of Lady Trent’s earlier memoirs, A Natural History of Dragons and The Tropic of Serpents, may believe themselves already acquainted with the particulars of her historic voyage aboard the Royal Survey Ship Basilisk, but the true story of that illuminating, harrowing, and scandalous journey has never been revealed—until now.

Six years after her perilous exploits in Eriga, Isabella embarks on her most ambitious expedition yet: a two-year trip around the world to study all manner of dragons in every place they might be found. From feathered serpents sunning themselves in the ruins of a fallen civilization to the mighty sea serpents of the tropics, these creatures are a source of both endless fascination and frequent peril. Accompanying her is not only her young son, Jake, but a chivalrous foreign archaeologist whose interests converge with Isabella’s in ways both professional and personal.

Science is, of course, the primary objective of the voyage, but Isabella’s life is rarely so simple. She must cope with storms, shipwrecks, intrigue, and warfare, even as she makes a discovery that offers a revolutionary new insight into the ancient history of dragons.

The first two volumes in the series, A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS and THE TROPIC OF SERPENTS, are also published in the UK by Titan Books. The series is published by Tor Books in the US.

‘Fans of fantasy, science, and history will adore this rich and absorbing tale of discovery.’Publishers Weekly on A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS

THE EDGE OF RUIN by Melinda Snodgrass out Tomorrow in the UK!

Snodgrass-EdgeOfRuin2014-Blog

THE EDGE OF RUIN, the second novel in Melinda Snodgrass‘s acclaimed Edge Series will be published tomorrow by Titan Books in the UK!

The sequel to THE EDGE OF REASON, George R.R. Martin has described the series as a blend of H.P. Lovecraft and H. L. Mencken, which ‘will delight thinkers — and outrage true believers — of all stripes.’ Here’s the synopsis…

A contemporary fantasy that explores the tensions between science and rationality, religion and superstition. An intelligent blend of Dante’s Infernoand Urban Fantasy…

Richard Oort, now CEO of Lumina Enterprises, has learned that an interdimensional gate has given the terrifying and grotesquely gluttonous Old Ones access to our universe. Richard tries to get the U.S. government to intervene before a rising tide of irrationality abetted by religious leaders and spiritual hucksters reduces humanity to madness.

Here are a couple more reviews of the series…

‘Snodgrass has a thick, meaty writing style that will satisfy the hungriest reader… she deftly weaves [her characters’] stories together to bind the interest and excitement of the story. Events in this novel will challenge the beliefs and thought systems of many and leave readers questioning themselves – but in a highly satisfying manner.’ — RT Book Reviews on THE EDGE OF RUIN

‘Peopled with a richly drawn cast of characters… the story is a big, complex and ambitious tale that rarely rests and demands the reader’s full attention. Thee ideas are provocative, strongly so… Readers looking for a thoughtful, action-packed and fascinating story, this one is for you. Strongly recommended.’ — SF Revu on THE EDGE OF RUIN

‘[A] gritty narrative of a war between light and dark… Balanc[es] a harsh critique of organized religion with touches of humor and a good-hearted priest who grounds his faith in the Golden Rule…’ — Publishers Weekly on THE EDGE OF REASON

‘This riveting tale resonates on many levels. Snodgrass entertains while skillfully raising questions about the origins of religion and technology that may offend some readers. There are chills and thrills aplenty, as well as food for thought. The characters are good, especially the hero’s emotional upheaval. You’ll be hooked until the end.’ — RT Book Reviews on THE EDGE OF REASON

Cover Reveal: Freda Warrington’s THE DARK ARTS OF BLOOD

WarringtonF-BW4-DarkArtsOfBlood-Blog

We can now share with you the cover for the fourth novel in Freda Warrington‘s critically-acclaimed Blood Wine series, THE DARK ARTS OF BLOOD. Due to be published by Titan Books, it follows the reissued editions of the first three novels in the series.

The novel is due to be published in May 2015. Here’s an early synopsis…

In the turmoil and glamour of 1920s Europe, vampires Karl, Charlotte and Violette face threats to their very existence. Fiery, handsome dancer Emil achieves his dream to partner the legendary ballerina Violette Lenoir until his forbidden desire for her becomes an obsession. Rejected, spiralling towards madness, he seeks solace with a mysterious beauty, a vampire with a hidden agenda.

The Blood Wine series also includes A TASTE OF BLOOD WINE, A DANCE IN BLOOD VELVET and THE DARK BLOOD OF POPPIES. All three are published in the UK and US by Titan Books.

Here’s just a small selection of the praise the series has received thus far…

‘A tale which throbs with lush romanticism.’ — The Times on A TASTE OF BLOOD WINE

‘… a really, really splendid read… It’s a story that plays out over cups of tea and glasses of brandy in the drawing rooms of chic London townhouses and glittering stately homes, and here again Warrington shows her writer’s chops, layering in exquisite period detail. Sometimes the effect is playfully satirical… lusciously picturesque… like a cross between Anne Rice and Kim Newman… not to be missed.’ — Starburst on A TASTE OF BLOOD WINE

‘The story neatly and scrupulously takes up the most important loose ends left dangling by the earlier volume, and moves with measured vigour towards a hectically extended climax, building a remarkable crescendo of action and emotion… amply fulfils the promise of its predecessor, and there is no doubt that the series will become one of the literary monuments of the nascent genre to which it belongs.’ — Interzone on A DANCE IN BLOOD VELVET

‘A gorgeous grave-throbber.’ — Time Out on THE DARK BLOOD OF POPPIES

Jack Campbell’s IMPERFECT SWORD Out Now in the UK

Campbell-LS3-ImperfectSwordUK-Blog

Jack Campbell‘s latest novel, IMPERFECT SWORD, is out today in the UK! The novel is the latest book set in the Lost Fleet universe – specifically, the third book in the Lost Stars trilogy – and is published by Titan Books. Here’s the synopsis…

Following a successful coup, the leaders of the rebel Midway Star System struggle to forge a government free enough to please its citizens yet strong enough to secure power. But in a world where former rulers have become new foes, an alien threat to humanity may turn old adversaries into uncertain allies.

General Artur Drakon knows three words describe someone who confides in a Syndicate CEO: Stupid. Betrayed. Dead. Despite his misgivings, he partnered with another former CEO to overthrow Syndic forces. Now, with an enigma fleet menacing their hard-earned independence, he can ill afford to trust her—or lose her support.

President Gwen Iceni believes Midway is humanity’s defense against the enigmas. Syndicate training taught her self-preservation in a crisis, yet she’s determined to fight for the star system’s fate… even if it means joining forces with Drakon—and an officer of the hated Alliance.

Their plan places the Midway flotilla at great risk in hopes of greater reward: recruiting the personnel necessary to man warships against the enigmas. But before facing the alien advance, Drakon and Iceni must survive hidden dangers closer to home: all-too-human threats that could jeopardize Midway’s freedom… and their own lives.

MarmellA-MO2-HallowPointUK-Blog

We’re very happy to share with you today the new cover for Ari Marmell‘s HALLOW POINT! The sequel to HOT LEAD, COLD IRON, the novel is due to be published in May 2015 by Titan Books. There’s no official synopsis, just yet, but we’ll be sure to share it as soon as we have it.

In the meantime, here are some reviews of the first Mick Oberon novel…

‘In this gripping fantastical investigation, Marmell (The Goblin Corps) creates an engaging world and an unlikely hero… The potent mix of gangsters, magic, Fae politics, and a strega on the warpath makes for a ride that never touches the brakes. Marmell expertly maximizes the thrills, leaving the reader with a lingering desire for a magic wand and a glass of warm milk.’Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

HOT LEAD, COLD IRON is as hard boiled a detective drama as anything written by Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler or Mickey Spillane, and Marmell captures the vernacular of the period wonderfully… if [the sequel] is as fun and entertaining as this one, then Ari Marmell will soon be crowned the foremost purveyor of Macabre Noir.’Starburst

‘There are enough subtle and surprising elements involved in the world to enchant readers, and Oberon is an absolutely delightful protagonist… He has an uncanny way of paring opposing elements – a strong, fast, bold…with stunningly subtle and incredibly well crafted world building elements… It’s a lot of fun, and Marmell is an author I really want to hit it big. He deserves it, and this book shows a lot of his strengths.’Bookworm Blues

‘Fantasy meets period detective-gangster drama… Marmell provides a rollicking take…[The voice] quickly becomes likable, full of grumpy asides and funny turns of phrase.’SFX Magazine

A contemporary fantasy that explores the tensions between science and rationality, religion and superstition. An intelligent blend of Dante’s Inferno and Urban Fantasy…

Richard is on patrol one night when he leaps to the defense of a terrified young woman fleeing something impossible: beings that can only be described as monsters. Beings that can only have been created by magic. But in saving the beautiful Rhianna, he gets drawn into the machinations of a mysterious billionaire who just might be Prometheus and Lucifer. And who claims to be waging a millennia-old war on the side of reason and light, defending humanity from others of his kind who want nothing more than to see us destroy ourselves with superstition, religion, darkness, fear.

UK Cover Reveal: IMPERFECT SWORD by Jack Campbell

Campbell-LS3-ImperfectSwordUK-Blog

That eye-catching piece above will grace the cover of the UK edition of Jack Campbell‘s third Lost Stars novel, IMPERFECT SWORD. The novel is due to be published in October 2014, by Titan Books. Here’s the synopsis…

President Gwen Iceni and General Artur Drakon have successfully liberated the Midway Star System — but the former rulers of the Syndicate Worlds won’t surrender the region without a fight. The dictatorial regime has ordered the ex-Syndicate CEOs terminated with extreme prejudice and the system’s citizens punished for their defiance.

Outnumbered and led by junior officers hastily promoted in the wake of the uprising, Midway’s warships are no match for the fleet massing and preparing to strike. But the Syndicate isn’t the only threat facing Iceni and Drakon. Another former CEO has taken control of the Ulindi Star System, the first calculated move toward establishing his own little empire.

With Drakon’s ground forces dispatched to Ulindi, Midway erupts in violence as Syndicate agents and other, unknown enemies stoke a renewed revolt against Iceni’s power — leaving both her and Drakon vulnerable to trusted officers just waiting for an opportune moment to betray them…

IMPERFECT SWORD follows TARNISHED KNIGHT and PERILOUS SHIELD. The series is published in the US by Ace Books (Penguin).

It’s still a little early for reviews to be cropping up, but Publishers Weekly have managed to get their hands on a copy and had this to say: ‘Campbell’s third Lost Stars military SF adventure (after The Lost Stars: PERILOUS SHIELD) delivers all his signature attractions… Campbell’s focus on the details of the Midway fleet and ground forces makes for a fast-paced thrill ride that leaps nimbly from harrowing to heartbreaking to heroic. The tentative steps of establishing a new society are no less intense. Both new and returning readers will dive right in.’

UK Publication Day: Daryl Gregory’s AFTERPARTY

GregoryD-Afterparty-BlogWe’re very happy to report that today Daryl Gregory‘s superb new novel, AFTERPARTY, arrives in UK bookstores! Published by Titan Books, the novel has already received a great deal of praise from peers and critics alike. First up, here’s the synopsis…

A near-future science fiction crime story about murder, drugs, neuroscience, more drugs, and God. It’s Elmore Leonard and Philip K. Dick road-tripping down neural pathways, with Hunter S. Thompson howling in the back seat.

‘Numinous’ opens up a portal to God – or, at least, a convincing illusion of one. In a world where God is a drug, one woman has to get sober. Lyda Rose was one of the four neuroscientists who helped create Numinous, a breakthrough drug intended to treat schizophrenia. Since unwittingly overdosing on the drug, Lyda has been haunted by visions of an angel she calls Dr. Gloria. Treated in an asylum, Lyda has to remind herself that the doctor is merely a drug- induced manifestation of her own temporal lobe, but the angel is awfully hard to argue with. Afterparty follows Lyda’s investigation into a series of Numinous-like overdoses. It is also about the ways that our brains can fool us, often for our own benefit.

Along the way the book asks twenty-first century questions: If personality, sexual orientation, religious belief, and morality can be chemically twisted, what is the self? Does free will exist? And is sin even possible?

And here’s just a small selection of the praise…

AFTERPARTY is a new, excellent science fiction novel by Daryl Gregory, about drugs, God, sanity, morals, and organized crime… Gregory is a great plotter, and the story races along like a thriller, but mountains more substance than your typical thriller.’ — Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing

‘This taut, brisk, gripping narrative, dazzlingly intercut with flashbacks and sidebars, oozes warmth and wit. A hugely entertaining, surprising and perhaps prophetic package that, without seeming to, raises profound questions about the human mind and the nature of perception.’ — Kirkus (Starred Review)

‘Smart, funny, fast, more than a little terrifying…. An exhilarating read.’ — Kim Stanley Robinson (Hugo Award Winning author of the Mars Trilogy)

‘Gregory dashes off his near-future story like a “chemjet” printing out sheets of smart drugs…The tragi-comical satire dispenses with sermons and easy morals, preferring to be entertaining and thought-provoking instead.’ — Publishers Weekly

AFTERPARTY is published in the US by Tor Books.

UK Publication Day: RESISTANCE by Samit Basu

Basu-T2-ResistanceUK-Blog

Today, Titan Books publish RESISTANCE, the highly-anticipated follow-up to Samit Basu‘s TURBULENCE! The novel is yet another action-packed take on the super-hero genre, and one that offers a great new twist on the popular sub-genre. Here’s the synopsis…

Eleven years after the passengers of flight BA142 from London to Delhi developed extraordinary abilities corresponding to their innermost desires, the world is overrun with supers. Some use their powers for good, others for evil, and some just want to smash up iconic monuments and get on TV. But now someone is hunting down supers, killing heroes and villains both, and it’s up to the Unit to stop them…

In case that didn’t whet your appetite, you can read excerpts of chapters 1 (Tor.com) and 3 (SF Signal).

Samit has also been busy on the interview circuit, and you can find him on Tor.com, SciFiNow, SFF World, and Suvudu. Here is just a selection of the early reviews for RESISTANCE

‘Adept plotting keeps… globe-spanning threads spooling smoothly and meticulous blocking gives the dazzling action sequences a cinematic bravura.’ — Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

‘Prepare to have your puny Earth brain blown out of the back of your head as Samit Basu takes the idea of superheroes and turns the dial up to 11.’ — Ben Aaronovitch (author of RIVERS OF LONDON)

‘Fresh, exciting heroics with a serious spine. What’s not to like?’Nick Harkaway (author of Angelmaker and Tigerman)

‘When I read TURBULENCE I thought the bar had been set too high for Basu to reach it again. I was wrong. This book is in fact better than TURBULENCE.’ — Cult Den

‘Speaking of action we were amazed by the description of Basu’s battle sequences which took on a new kind of life as we read them. They were deeply cinematic in scope… a multifaceted master stroke for the author… RESISTANCE is a great take on modern portrayals of super-powers.’Vada Magazine

‘What would it be like if normal humans were suddenly given superpowers? I feel both books deal with this issue in a way that isn’t just humorous, but also realistic. And that’s what makes both books a good read.’ — FanGirl Confessions on both TURBULENCE and RESISTANCE

‘If you have the guts to poke your head out of the comfortable and familiar and try a new, somewhat foreign flavor (“international” would be a better description), you will be richly rewarded. Only look out for falling buildings, animated statues, monsters with poisonous flatulence, and the possibility of at least a third book to come!’ — MuggleNet

UK Publication Day: TROPIC OF SERPENTS by Marie Brennan

BrennanM-LT2-TropicOfSerpentsUK-Blog

The highly anticipated sequel to Marie Brennan‘s first Memoir by Lady Trent is out today in the UK! THE TROPIC OF SERPENTS is published in the UK by Titan Books. Here’s the synopsis…

Three years after her fateful journeys through the forbidding mountains of Vystrana, in which she lost her husband, the widowed Mrs. Camherst defies family and convention to embark on an expedition to the savage, war-torn continent of Eriga, home of such exotic draconian species as the grass-dwelling snakes of the savannah, arboreal tree snakes, and, most elusive of all, the legendary swamp-wyrms of the tropics.

The expedition is not an easy one. Accompanied by both an old associate and a runaway heiress, Isabella must brave oppressive heat, merciless fevers, palace intrigues, gossip, and other hazards in order to satisfy her boundless fascination with all things draconian, even if it means venturing deep into the forbidden jungle known as the Green Hell – where her courage, resourcefulness, and scientific curiosity will be tested as never before.

Here’s some the praise the book has received…

‘Uncompromisingly honest and forthright as the first, narrated in Brennan’s usual crisp, vivid style, with a heroine at once admirable, formidable and captivating. Reader, lose no time in making Isabella’s acquaintance.’ — Kirkus (Starred Review)

‘A rollicking adventure in which women wearing unnerving amounts of underwear tromp through jungles on dragon-hunting safaris. Really, that should be more than enough for just about everyone.’ — New York Times

THE TROPIC OF SERPENTS is in part a fantasy travelogue, a guided tour of a world aslant from our own. It is also, in its way, a very science-fictional fantasy novel: it is in love with the idea of discovery, of knowing the world, of knowledge for the sake of knowledge… a thoroughly enjoyable book. I recommend it without hesitation.’ — Tor.com

‘Brennan’s follow up A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS is every bit as exciting and engrossing as the first part of Lady Trent’s memoir… Isabella’s strength and bravery in the name of scientific advancement… is beyond admirable–she’s a model protagonist.’ — RT Book Reviews

THE TROPIC OF SERPENTS: A Memoir By Lady Trent brings dragons into the Victorian world, and flawlessly so… [it] gives fantasy readers another good reason to enter Brennan’s fantastical world.’ — Washington Post

The Memoirs by Lady Trent series includes A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS, THE TROPIC OF SERPENTS, and THE VOYAGE OF THE BASILISK (expected 2015). Two further, as-yet-untitled volumes are also planned. The series is published by Titan in the UK, and Tor Books in the US.
