Aliette de Bodard to attend the North London Literary Festival

Critically-acclaimed author Aliette de Bodard is due to attend the North London Literary Festival next week, March 24th, where she will take part in a special event sponsored by the Science Fiction Foundation. Specifically, at 5:30pm, she will be discussing speculative fiction with fellow author Stephanie Saulter, and Farah Mendlesohn (who will chair the discussion).

Aliette is the author of the Obsidian & Blood trilogy, published by Angry Robot Books; multiple award-winning and nominated short stories and novellas; and also the highly anticipated upcoming new novel HOUSE OF SHATTERED WINGS (the first in a planned duology). Rights for the latter were recently sold to Gollancz in the UK and Roc Books in the US – both are due to publish in August 2015. Here’s the synopsis from Aliette’s website:

New International Editions of ALAN TURING: THE ENIGMA

Above are the covers for two more international editions of Andrew Hodges‘s critically-acclaimed ALAN TURING: THE ENIGMA. Respectively, Italian, published by Bollati Boringhieri; and Hungarian, published by Gabo. As is clear from the covers, the biography was the inspiration behind the Oscar-winning movie, THE IMITATION GAME.

Alan Turing was the mathematician whose cipher-cracking transformed the Second World War. Taken on by British Intelligence in 1938, as a shy young Cambridge don, he combined brilliant logic with a flair for engineering. In 1940 his machines were breaking the Enigma-enciphered messages of Nazi Germany’s air force. He then headed the penetration of the super-secure U-boat communications.

Today, Brandon Sanderson‘s WORDS OF RADIANCE is published in paperback. Gollancz are publishing the novel, the second in Sanderson’s New York Times (#1) and Sunday Times (#2) bestselling Stormlight Archives series, in two parts. Here’s the synopsis…

Today we can share two more Chinese-language covers, this time for Roger Zelazny‘s LORD OF LIGHT (above) and CREATURES OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS (below). Both books will be published later this year by the Beijing Publishing United Co., Ltd.

LORD OF LIGHT won the Hugo Award and was nominated for the Nebula Award in 1968. The novel is published in the UK by Gollancz, as part of the SF Masterworks series. Here’s the synopsis…

THE IMITATION GAME Wins Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay

Based on Andrew Hodges‘s ALAN TURING: THE ENIGMA, THE IMITATION GAME last night won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay! Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley, the movie began generating Oscar buzz just after its first advance screenings, and great reviews just keep coming. First published in 1983, many consider the biography to be the finest ever written about Turing.

Nebula Nomination for Aliette de Bodard

As announced over the weekend, Aliette de Bodard has racked up yet another well-deserved award nomination. Aliette’s THE BREATH OF WAR has been nominated in the short story category. The story originally appeared in the March 6th, 2014 issue of Beneath Ceaseless Skies (#142). The story is also free to read online, here.
