OUTSIDE THE DOG MUSEUM (British Fantasy Award Best Novel winner)…

Recovering from a recent nervous breakdown, Harry Radcliffe, known for his visionary, award-winning architectural marvels that blur the lines between buildings and abstract sculptures, embarks on a unique project in the Middle East: the construction of a Dog Museum commissioned by a powerful royal family there. His journey takes a mystical turn when, after the museum is threatened by an opposing warlord there, the project is moved to a site in the Austrian alps. As construction progresses, uncanny events and figures emerge to both complicate and enhance Radcliffe’s vision.

WHITE APPLES

Vincent Ettrich is a charming carefree man who discovers he has recently died but been mysteriously resurrected. As he tries to piece together the circumstances of his death and the reason for his return, he learns his resurrection is not just a second chance at life but also a pivotal event in a cosmic battle.

Vincent’s lover, Isabelle, plays a crucial role in this mystery. She is pregnant with their child, who is destined to be a key figure in this vast struggle. Their child, however, will only survive if Vincent can protect the delicate balance between life and death. This responsibility forces him to confront his past, his relationships, and the metaphysical forces that govern the universe.

As Vincent uncovers the truth about his resurrection, he encounters a series of enigmatic characters and surreal events that challenge his understanding of reality. The novel delves deeply into themes of love, fate, and the cyclical nature of existence, all while maintaining a dreamlike and haunting atmosphere

GLASS SOUP, a ‘loose sequel’ to WHITE APPLES

The story continues to explore themes of life, death, love, and the metaphysical battle between good and evil.

The novel follows Vincent Ettrich and his lover, Isabelle Neukor, who were central to the plot of White Apples. Having died, Vincent is once again alive, recently resurrected for some mysterious reason. Isabelle, pregnant with their child, discovers that their unborn son is destined to play a crucial role in the cosmic struggle between chaos and order.

The stakes are high as the forces of chaos, represented by a group of powerful and malevolent beings, seek to manipulate the unborn child for their own ends. The narrative weaves through various dimensions and states of existence, blurring the line between the living and the dead. Characters move freely between life and the afterlife, where reality itself seems to be constantly shifting.

In the afterlife, which is depicted as a surreal, dreamlike landscape, Vincent and Isabelle must navigate a series of strange and dangerous encounters. They meet bizarre and memorable characters, each with their own role in the unfolding cosmic drama. Among them is a particularly sinister figure who seeks to disrupt the balance of the universe and plunge everything into chaos.

As the story progresses, the boundary between dreams and reality becomes increasingly porous and dangerous for the couple while they must fight with everything they have to protect their child.

KISSING THE BEEHIVE

The famous novelist Samuel Bayer is stuck in the middle of the first writer’s block he has ever known. Hoping to be inspired, he returns to his hometown for the first time in years to investigate the mystery of a seemingly unsolved murder of a young woman, Pauline Ostrova, whose boyfriend was convicted of the crime and later died in prison. But the further he looks into the crime, Bayer begins to question the validity of the conviction. As he navigates his childhood memories and the eerie atmosphere of his hometown, he becomes increasingly involved in unraveling the truth behind Pauline’s death. Digging deeper into the past, he encounters various characters that shape his understanding of the events surrounding the murder, ultimately leading to a reflection on the nature of truth and the impact of unresolved histories on personal identity.

THE MARRIAGE OF STICKS, which was an August Derleth Award nominee…

The Marriage of Sticks by Jonathan Carroll is a surreal and introspective novel that blends elements of magical realism with psychological drama. The story revolves around Miranda Romanac, a successful and independent woman in her thirties who works in New York City as a dealer of rare books. Despite her career success, Miranda leads a somewhat detached and self-centered life, prioritizing her own needs and desires over meaningful connections with others.

Mirandaa’s life makes an unexpected turn when she encounters Hugh Oakley, an older man with whom she begins a relationship. Hugh is both enigmatic and fascinating. Their relationship is intense and fulfilling in a way she has never experienced.

As the story progresses, Miranda’s life becomes increasingly surreal. She begins to experience strange and unsettling visions, as well as encounters with ghostly figures from her past. These supernatural elements appear to be manifestations of her unresolved guilt and emotional wounds she has inflicted on others throughout her life. One of these encounters is with a woman who claims to be her future self, warning her about the consequences of her choices.

The novel’s title, The Marriage of Sticks, refers to a metaphorical ceremony that represents the union of the past and present, the merging of one’s actions and their consequences. As Miranda delves deeper into her own psyche, she is forced to confront the mistakes she has made, particularly in her relationships with others. The novel explores themes of regret, redemption, and the possibility of change.

THE WOODEN SEA, which was a New York Times Notable Book, and nominated for the World Fantasy and Locus awards…

Frannie McCabe, police chief of Crane’s View, New York discovers a dead three-legged dog in the middle of the street. When he decides to bury it, strange things begin to happen. The dog inexplicably reappears, first in his office and then alive, kicking off a series of bizarre events that make McCabe question both his sanity and reality.

As Frannie navigates these odd occurrences, he encounters a mysterious stranger who seems to know a lot about him and the strange events taking place all around him. This figure leads him on a journey through time, revealing that Frannie is caught in a loop, and that the choices he makes have far-reaching implications not just for his own life, but for the entire town and beyond.

McCabe finds himself grappling with questions about free will, the nature of reality, and the possibility of alternate universes. His journey becomes one of self-discovery, as he uncovers hidden truths about his past, his family, and his future.

In the end, The Wooden Sea leaves readers pondering the mysteries of existence, the choices we make, and the unseen forces that shape our lives.

A car bomb in the back streets of Tel Aviv. A diamond robbery in Haifa. Civil war in Lebanon. Rebel fighters in the Colombian jungle. A double murder in Los Angeles.

How do they all connect? Only Cohen knows.

Maror is the story of a war for a country’s soul – a dazzling spread of narrative gunshots across four decades and three continents.

It is a true story. All of these things happened.

Lavie Tidhar’s ADAMA Longlisted for Nota Bene Prize!

We’re very happy to report that ADAMA by Lavie Tidhar has been long-listed for the Nota Bene Prize! Here’s a little bit about the award, from their website:

“Championing influential fiction, the Nota Bene Prize highlights and celebrates the power of the reading community. Focusing on thought-provoking and relatable reads that have received organic, word-of-mouth recognition…”

Published by Apollo/Head of Zeus, ADAMA is a stand-alone novel. Here’s the synopsis…

THERE IS NO LAND WITHOUT BLOOD, AND I WATER THIS LAND WITH THE BLOOD OF MY MEN.

Ruth’s family were in Budapest when the Nazis came.

Now Ruth is in Palestine, amid the bare hills inland from Haifa, breaking the rocky soil of an unyielding land before it breaks her.

With her comrades, her fellow kibbutzniks, she will build a better world. There will be green grass, orange trees and pomegranates, a land that is their own and no one else’s.

So they till their fields, dig their wells, build their homes and forge a new way of living, fiercely proud of their shared pursuit of a dream.

But as one generation begets another, the dream unravels, twisted into a dark tapestry of secrets and lies; sacrificed for revenge, forbidden love and murder.

A sweeping historical epic following four generations of a single family as they struggle to hold on to their land and each other.

Here’s just a small selection taken from the many great reviews ADAMA has received so far…

ADAMA is an unstoppable masterpiece… Tidhar is a magician, a time-traveler, a historian, a comedian, a raconteur, a subversive, a truth teller and also one of the finest writers around. If history is a nightmare we’re all trying to wake up from, then ADAMA is a trumpet blast that rings out the past and into the future.’ — Junot Diaz

‘The prolific Tidhar has previously stuck to science fiction, but he is fast emerging as the leader of a new wave of Israeli literature, thanks to his risky, exhilarating experiments with tone and genre… ADAMA, which means ‘land’ in Hebrew (although ‘dam’ means blood) reaches further back, to pre-state Palestine and its displaced persons camps, through the story of Ruth, whose family escaped the Nazis in Budapest and who spends much of her life on a kibbutz… in Tidhar’s hands the kibbutz is no rose-tinted utopian community, but a harbinger of savage dislocation and violence. It’s not an easy read, but Tidhar’s imagination is both Old Testament through and through, and sick with a 21st-century disenchantment.’ — Daily Mail

ADAMA is the second in an ambitious trilogy about the tumultuous birth of Israel, but can be read as a standalone. It is a brilliantly unsentimental portrayal, full of moral murkiness and tarnished hopes, with small, half-glimpsed bursts of joy.’ — The Times (UK), Best Historical Fiction of the Month

‘A novel of immense power that resists easy answers to difficult questions.’ — The Times

‘Word by word I was drawn deeper and deeper into this incredible book – a story of inheritance, loss, longing and what could have been. Lavie Tidhar’s prose is beautiful, his characters lacerating and heartbreaking by turns. I loved it.’Catriona Ward

‘Comparisons to James Ellroy and Marlon James are valid… On every page we feel we’re among real, breathing people… [a] compelling, unflinching roman-fleuve.’ — Times Literary Supplement (joint review of ADAMA and MAROR)

‘As a study of biblical comeuppance, the land and the blood have the last say. I recommend Adama as an instructive primer for today’s generation of Israeli politicians. There are, indeed, lessons to be learned.’ — Jewish Chronicle

‘This violent, shadowy history of a kibbutz family makes for a propulsive, decades spanning noir saga. I couldn’t put it down.’ — Silvia Moreno-Garcia

‘A family of Israeli kibbuitzniks pay in blood and grief over several generations for the liberty of their newly founded state through wars, treachery and love. A brutal but compassionate and compelling view of the compromises required to sustain a nation, with smugglers, gangsters, idealists, soldiers and crooked cops caught in the web of history.’ — Maxim Jakubowski

‘A brutal but compassionate and compelling view of the compromises required to sustain a nation, with smugglers, gangsters, idealists, soldiers and crooked cops caught in the web of history. Again, the kaleidoscopic approach forms a picture in which history and individuals fight haphazardly against fate, at times reminiscent of the word torrents of a James Ellroy in full flow, but with a larger sense of profane passion. Tidhar however never forgets the human factor involved and his colourful cast of anti-heroes rage against the night and a past they cannot escape and the interlaced stories truly grip as connections appear in the shadows of history. Powerful stuff.’ — Crime Time

  • THE GHOST IN LOVE
  • BATHING THE LION
  • TEACHING THE DOG TO READ (a novella)

THE LAND OF LAUGHS was first published in 1980 — the new edition is due to be published on July 16th. It follows a self-involved writer and a naïve puppeteer on their journey to the small town their favorite author, Marshall France, called home. Their quest to co-write a biography of France is quickly derailed by the sheer oddness of the town—and its striking resemblance to the worlds the author created. The novel is a deft combination of fantasy, speculative fiction, and magical realism, with a few talking dogs thrown in for good measure. It rightfully launched Carroll’s career, establishing him as a singular voice in genre fiction.

‘Jonathan Carroll’s storytelling is a magical dance of imagination and emotion, leaving readers spellbound with every word.’New York Times

‘With each novel, Jonathan Carroll defies expectations and pushes the boundaries of genre, reminding us of the power of storytelling to surprise, challenge, and move us.’Library Journal

‘Carroll’s novels are a masterclass in blending the ordinary with the extraordinary, delivering tales that are both hauntingly surreal and deeply human.’Guardian

‘Carroll’s prose is a symphony of vivid imagery and elegant language, painting landscapes that are as beautiful as they are unsettling.’Publishers Weekly

‘Reading Jonathan Carroll, one thinks of a blind person stroking a drugged tiger—an experience that is sensuous, dreamy, and dangerous all at once. And then, of course, the tiger wakes up.’Bruce Wagner, novelist and screenwriter

The UK edition of MJ Wassmer‘s highly-anticipated debut, ZERO STARS, DO NOT RECOMMEND is out in two weeks! Due to be published by Zaffre Books on July 4th, here’s the synopsis…

What happens when you’re on holiday and the sun explodes?

> Passport
> Suncream
> Apocalypse???

Professional underachiever Dan Foster is finally taking a break. Sure, his life has been average at best and, yes, he has never has quite lived up to his potential. But after a few Bud Lights in paradise with his girlfriend Mara, things are starting to look up.

Then the sun explodes.

With the island suddenly plunged into darkness, the ultra-rich guests hijack the remaining supplies and declare themselves the new ruling class. Led by a fitness influencer turned ruthless dictator, martial law is declared and the hoi polloi are press-ganged into service. And it’s just Dan’s luck that he could land an even worse job while on holiday.

As temperatures drop and class tensions rise, Dan might have found a way for himself and Mara to escape the island. But sneaking away would also mean abandoning the burgeoning revolution that he might-have-kind-of-sort-of single-handedly started.

Here are just a small sample taken from the advance praise that the novel has received so far…

The novel is also available as an audiobook, published by W. F. Howes, and narrated by Levi Goldmeier.

If history is a nightmare we’re all trying to wake up from, then ADAMA is a trumpet blast that rings out the past and into the future.’ — Junot Diaz

‘A propulsive, decades-spanning noir saga. I couldn’t put it down.’Silvia Moreno-Garcia

‘Lavie Tidhar’s prose is beautiful, his characters lacerating and heartbreaking… I loved it.’Catriona Ward
