Genesis Fleet ASCENDANT in the UK!

The second novel in Jack Campbell‘s Genesis Fleet series is published by Titan Books  today in the UK! Here’s the synopsis for ASCENDANT

A young fleet officer and a Marine stand together to defend their colony…

In the three years since former fleet officer Rob Geary and former Marine Mele Darcy led improvised forces to repel attacks on the world of Glenlyon, Old Earth and the Old Colonies have continued to shrink their military forces.

But open warfare erupts once again when Glenlyon tries to force open a trade route. Isolated and alone, Glenlyon places its hope in informal agreements with other worlds also facing attack. But fiercely independent worlds settled by people who wanted to escape higher authority don’t easily agree to such commitments. While politicians try to bring some kind of formal alliance into being, Geary and Darcy once again find themselves fighting desperately to defend their world, hoping they can hold out until help arrives.

If it comes at all…

The Genesis Fleet series is, as the cover above notes, is a prequel series to Campbell’s bestselling Lost Fleet novels, which are also published by Titan Books in the UK (as are a number of the author’s other Sci-Fi series). AN EASY DEATH… a New Series, and an Eye-Catching Cover!

At the end of last week, Piatkus unveiled the cover for Charlaine Harris‘s next novel! AN EASY DEATH, the first novel in the Gunnie Rose series, is due to be published in the UK on October 4th, 2018. At the moment, Piatkus’s website doesn’t have a detailed synopsis, only describing the main character, Lizzie Rose as ‘A woman fighting unimaginable odds to keep her people alive after the disintegration of America’.

The synopsis from the North American edition (to be published by Saga Press) has some more detail, though…

Set in a fractured United States, in the southwestern country now known as Texoma. A world where magic is acknowledged but mistrusted, especially by a young gunslinger named Lizbeth Rose. Battered by a run across the border to Mexico Lizbeth Rose takes a job offer from a pair of Russian wizards to be their local guide and gunnie. For the wizards, Gunnie Rose has already acquired a fearsome reputation and they’re at a desperate crossroad, even if they won’t admit it. They’re searching through the small border towns near Mexico, trying to locate a low-level magic practitioner, Oleg Karkarov. The wizards believe Oleg is a direct descendant of Grigori Rasputin, and that Oleg’s blood can save the young tsar’s life.

As the trio journey through an altered America, shattered into several countries by the assassination of Franklin Roosevelt and the Great Depression, they’re set on by enemies. It’s clear that a powerful force does not want them to succeed in their mission. Lizbeth Rose is a gunnie who has never failed a client, but her oath will test all of her skills and resolve to get them all out alive.

Piatkus also publishes Charlaine’s Aurora Teagarden series in the UK:

Mick Oberon’s next job is told IN TRUTH AND CLAW…

In early August, Titan Books are due to publish Ari Marmell‘s fourth Mick Oberon novel, IN TRUTH AND CLAW. In 1930s Chicago, things can get tricky for a PI of the supernatural…

Mick Oberon may look like just another 1930s private detective, but beneath the fedora and the overcoat, he’s got pointy ears and he’s packing a wand. A series of brutal murders is sweeping Chicago, baffling both the local police and the Seelie Court, who sense an aura of corruption and death has touched Mick himself. When Mick’s associates become targets, and a vampire appears in his office, Mick is drawn into his most dangerous hunt yet.

Titan has also published the first three novels in the series: HOT LEAD, COLD IRON, HALLOW POINT and DEAD TO RITES. Here are some of the great reviews the series has received so far…

‘In this gripping fantastical investigation, Marmell (The Goblin Corps) creates an engaging world and an unlikely hero… The potent mix of gangsters, magic, Fae politics, and a strega on the warpath makes for a ride that never touches the brakes. Marmell expertly maximizes the thrills, leaving the reader with a lingering desire for a magic wand and a glass of warm milk.’Publishers Weekly on HOT LEAD, COLD IRON

‘An urban fantasy well-suited to lovers of historical fantasy, especially of Gangster-era Chicago… it’s an extremely entertaining historical / urban fantasy…’SF Signal on HOT LEAD, COLD IRON

‘It’s a fascinating concept, and a solid foundation for yet another gripping story… a highly enjoyable ride; the writing takes its reader into the heart of every scene… It’s a great read, reinvigorating the tropes of two genres to enable them to rise above cliché status. With final revelations that imply a larger conspiracy, it seems Marmell has plenty more up his sleeve for his hero, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for Mick Oberon in the future.’Starburst on HALLOW POINT

‘[B]reakneck pacing… the marvelous character that is Mick Oberon… make HALLOW POINT a more than great follow-up.’Book Plank

‘The third entry (after Hallow Point) in the inventive series about a 1930s private eye who also happens to be one of the Fae mixes supernatural investigations and Al Capone’s Chicago for an irresistible combo.’Library Journal on DEAD TO RITES

Tomorrow, travel to THE CORE in paperback!

The conclusion to the Peter V. Brett‘s critically-acclaimed, best-selling Demon Cycle series is out tomorrow in paperback! Published in the UK by Voyager, here’s the synopsis for THE CORE

The war has begun

For time out of mind, bloodthirsty demons have stalked the night, culling the human race to scattered remnants dependent on half-forgotten magics to protect them.

Two heroes arose, men as close as brothers, yet divided by bitter betrayal. Arlen Bales became known as the Painted Man, tattooed head-to-toe with powerful magic symbols that enable him to fight demons in hand-to-hand combat and emerge victorious. Ahmann Jardir, armed with magically warded weapons, called himself the Deliverer, a figure prophesied to unite humanity and lead them to triumph in Sharak Kathe final war against demonkind.

But in their efforts to bring the war to the demons, Arlen and Jardir have set something in motion that may prove the end of everything they hold dear: a Swarm. Now the war is at hand, and humanity cannot hope to win it unless Arlen and Jardir, with the help of Arlen’s wife, Renna, can bend a captured demon prince to their will and force the devious creature to lead them to the Core, where the Mother of Demons breeds an inexhaustible army.

Trusting their closest confidantes, Leesha, Inevera, Ragen, and Elissa, to rally the fractious people of the Free Cities and lead them against the Swarm, Arlen, Renna, and Jardir set out on a desperate quest into the darkest depths of evil from which none of them expects to return alive.

Voyager has published all of Brett’s Demon Cycle stories — the novels THE PAINTED MAN, THE DESERT SPEAR, THE DAYLIGHT WAR and THE SKULL THRONE, and the novellas THE GREAT BAZAAR AND BRAYAN’S GOLD, MESSENGER’S LEGACY and the upcoming BARREN.

And, of course, we cannot skip this opportunity to mention again that Voyager has recently purchased the rights to three upcoming novels by Brett, set in the same world, a few years after the events of THE CORE!

Published in the UK by Gollancz, here’s the synopsis for OATHBRINGER

Humanity faces a new Desolation with the return of the Voidbringers, a foe whose numbers are as great as their thirst for vengeance.

The Alethi armies commanded by Dalinar Kholin won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost: The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, and now its destruction sweeps the world and its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the true horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that their newly kindled anger may be wholly justified.

Nestled in the mountains high above the storms, in the tower city of Urithiru, Shallan Davar investigates the wonders of the ancient stronghold of the Knights Radiant and unearths the dark secrets lurking in its depths. And Dalinar realizes that his holy mission to unite his homeland of Alethkar was too narrow in scope. Unless all the nations of Roshar can put Dalinar’s blood-soaked past aside and stand together — and unless Dalinar himself can confront that past — even the restoration of the Knights Radiant will not avert the end of civilization.

The first two novels in the Stormlight Archive are also published in the UK by Gollancz, as are Brandon’s critically-acclaimed Mistborn novels and a number of stand-alone novels and novellas.

A new omnibus of THREE GREAT NOVELS by R.A. Lafferty coming soon in the UK

In August, Gollancz is due to published an omnibus edition collecting THREE GREAT NOVELS by R.A. Lafferty! Here’s the volume’s official synopsis…

Three early masterpieces from one of science fiction’s great stylists.

Acclaimed, as one of the most original voices in modern literature, Raphael Aloysius Lafferty drew more from traditional oral storytelling techniques than from the usual pulp roots of SF. His inventive style and fondness for tall tales marked him out from his contemporaries, and writers of the calibre of Harlan Ellison, Neil Gaiman and Gene Wolfe acknowledge him as a major influence and force in the field. His fiction has garnered numerous award wins and nominations and he has been given the prestigious SFWA Grand Master Award and the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

This volume contains three of his early novels: the Hugo- and Nebula-shortlisted Past Master, space opera re-telling of The Odyssey, Space Chantey, and Fourth Mansions, also shortlisted for the Nebula.

Here are some more details for each of the novels included in the book. Let’s start with SPACE CHANTEY, which was first published in 1968…

Set in the far future, Space Chantey chronicles the adventures of Space Captain Roadstrum and his crew, on a journey through galaxies resonant with myth and peril as Roadstrum valiantly battles to return across the cosmos to Big Tulsa, the Capital of the World, and to his wife and young son Tele-Max.

First published in 1969, FOURTH MANSIONS was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel…

Seven very special people blending to create a higher form of humanity…

A laughing man living alone on a mountain top, guarding the world…

The returnees, men who live again and again, century after century…

A dog-ape plappergeist who can be seen only from the corner of the eye…

And a young man named Foley, very much like you or me, who begins to find out about these people and these things, and how they are shaping the destiny of the world…

PAST MASTER, also originally published in 1968, was nominated for the Hugo and Nebula Best Novel awards…

The golden planet of Astrobe, made in the image of Utopia, now faced a crisis which could destroy it forever; and yet, no one could understand it: In a world where wealth & comfort were free to everyone, why did so many desert the golden cities for the slums of Cathead and the Barrio? Why did they turn away from the Astrobe dream and seek lives of bone-crushing work, squalor and disease?

The rulers of Astrobe didn’t know, so they sought in humankind’s past for a leader who could give them the answers. They brought to life the one man out of history who would most want to destroy Astrobe!

Many of Lafferty’s novels have also been published in the UK by Gollancz’s SF Gateway project (as eBooks).

Zeno represents R.A. Lafferty in the UK and Commonwealth, on behalf of the JABberwocky Literary Agency in New York.

Three new novels from Peter V. Brett coming soon from Voyager!

 www.KarstenMoran.com

As was announced last week, a new fantasy trilogy by Peter V. Brett have been bought by Natasha Bardon at Voyager Books in the UK! The series is set in the same world as the best-selling Demon Cycle series, 15 years after the events of THE CORE. The two main protagonists are Olive Paper and Darin Bales (two surnames that should be very familiar to readers of the recently-completed first series).

‘It’s thrilling to be embarking on a new entry point into Peter’s work which his fans will love, but which also offers a brilliant opportunity for new readers to discover him,’ says Natasha Bardon of Voyager. That’s right: while we highly recommend you also read Brett’s Demon Cycle series, these new books could serve as an entry point for new readers. The first novel is tentatively titled THE DESERT PRINCE.

Here’s what Brett said of the new series: ‘I have been laying the groundwork for this series for years and am so excited to finally bring it to life. It keeps all the things I love about the Demon Cycle, while taking things in a fresh direction that provides an exciting entry point for new and younger readers. Olive Paper will be a hero unlike any other.’

‘It’s been a privilege to watch the Demon Cycle books go from strength to strength,’ said Zeno’s John Berlyne. ‘Peter writes the very best kind of brilliantly immersive, compelling adventures. This new series will be an absolute must-read for all fantasy fans, everywhere.’

We will share news about release dates and covers as soon as we have them, so be sure to keep an eye on our newsfeed and also follow us on Twitter.

The Demon Cycle series includes five published novels and three novellas, all published in the UK by Voyager — another novella, THE BARREN, is due out later this year.

Secondly, Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive series has been nominated for Best Series. Currently comprised of three novels — THE WAY OF KINGS, WORDS OF RADIANCE and OATHBRINGER (more on the way) — the series is published in the UK by Gollancz. Here’s the synopsis for the first book…

According to mythology mankind used to live in The Tranquiline Halls. Heaven. But then the Voidbringers assaulted and captured heaven, casting out God and men. Men took root on Roshar, the world of storms. And the Voidbringers followed…

They came against man ten thousand times. To help them cope, the Almighty gave men powerful suits of armor and mystical weapons, known as Shardblades. Led by ten angelic Heralds and ten orders of knights known as Radiants, mankind finally won.

Or so the legends say. Today, the only remnants of those supposed battles are the Shardblades, the possession of which makes a man nearly invincible on the battlefield. The entire world is at war with itself — and has been for centuries since the Radiants turned against mankind. Kings strive to win more Shardblades, each secretly wishing to be the one who will finally unite all of mankind under a single throne.

On a world scoured down to the rock by terrifying hurricanes that blow through every few day a young spearman forced into the army of a Shardbearer, led to war against an enemy he doesn’t understand and doesn’t really want to fight.

What happened deep in mankind’s past?

Why did the Radiants turn against mankind, and what happened to the magic they used to wield?

Last but by no means least, Marie Brennan’s Memoirs of Lady Trent novels have been nominated in the Best Series category! Published in the UK by Titan Books, all five novels are out now: A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS, THE TROPIC OF SERPENTS, VOYAGE OF THE BASILISK, and WITHIN THE SANCTUARY OF WINGS. Here’s the synopsis for the first book…

All the world, from Scirland to the farthest reaches of Eriga, know Isabella, Lady Trent, to be the world’s preeminent dragon naturalist. She is the remarkable woman who brought the study of dragons out of the misty shadows of myth into the clear light of modern science. But before she became the illustrious figure we know today, there was a bookish young woman whose passion for learning, natural history, and, yes, dragons defied the stifling conventions of her day. Here at last, in her own words, is the true story of a pioneering spirit who risked her reputation, her prospects, and her fragile flesh and bone to satisfy her scientific curiosity; of how she sought true love and happiness despite her lamentable eccentricities; and of her thrilling expedition to the perilous mountains of Vystrana, where she made the first of many historic discoveries that would change the world forever.
