Charlaine Harris & Christopher Golden’s CEMETERY GIRL series comes to a close

HAUNTED is published by Jo Fletcher Books today in the UK! The third and final instalment in Charlaine Harris and Christopher Golden‘s Cemetery Girl graphic novel series, here’s the synopsis…

Calexa Rose Dunhill died once, just for a moment — but now someone wants her dead permanently…

They call her the Ghost of Dunhill Cemetery, but most people think ‘the Cemetery Girl’ is just a story. In some ways, that’s true. Her chosen name is Calexa Rose Dunhill, but she doesn’t know her real name. When she first arrived here, all she knew was that someone had tried to murder her: they’d dumped her body and left her for dead. Calexa has been hiding out here, afraid to seek out her true identity for fear that her would-be murderer would find her and finish the job. And someone is searching for her… a man named Salazar, who holds the key that will unlock the secrets of Calexa’s past.

Calexa has new secrets as well, including the fact that she was murdered: she did die, if only for a moment — but in that moment, something changed inside her. Now, if someone dies near her, their spirit is drawn to Calexa, drawn into her. It has happened twice before, but now, as her worst fears come true and the killers have found her trail, the third ghost to take up residence in Calexa’s soul will change everything…

The first two books — THE PRETENDERS and INHERITANCE — are also published by Jo Fletcher Books. An eBook omnibus of the trilogy is also published today.

LEGION VS PHALANX out now in the US!

Released last week in the UK, we’re happy to report that Myke Cole‘s first history book, LEGION VS PHALANX is out now in North America! Published by Osprey Publishing, here’s the synopsis…

From the time of Ancient Sumeria, the heavy infantry phalanx dominated the battlefield. Armed with spears or pikes, standing shoulder to shoulder with shields interlocking, the men of the phalanx presented an impenetrable wall of wood and metal to the enemy. Until, that is, the Roman legion emerged to challenge them as masters of infantry battle.

Covering the period in which the legion and phalanx clashed (280-168 BC), Myke Cole delves into their tactics, arms and equipment, organization and deployment. Drawing on original primary sources to examine six battles in which the legion fought the phalanx — Heraclea (280 BC), Asculum (279 BC), Beneventum (275 BC), Cynoscephalae (197 BC), Magnesia (190 BC), and Pydna (168 BC) — he shows how and why the Roman legion, with its flexible organization, versatile tactics and iron discipline, came to eclipse the hitherto untouchable Hellenistic phalanx and dominate the ancient battlefield.

You can read an excerpt from the book over on Tor.com.

Cole is also the novel of the critically-acclaimed Shadow Ops and Operator trilogies, published in the UK by Headline.

OATHBRINGER, the third novel in Brandon Sanderson‘s critically-acclaimed, best-selling Stormlight Archive fantasy series, is out now in paperback! Published by Gollancz, the novel recently won a Dragon Award for Best Fantasy novel! Here’s the synopsis…

Humanity faces a new Desolation with the return of the Voidbringers, a foe whose numbers are as great as their thirst for vengeance.

The Alethi armies commanded by Dalinar Kholin won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost: The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, and now its destruction sweeps the world and its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the true horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that their newly kindled anger may be wholly justified.

Nestled in the mountains high above the storms, in the tower city of Urithiru, Shallan Davar investigates the wonders of the ancient stronghold of the Knights Radiant and unearths the dark secrets lurking in its depths. And Dalinar realizes that his holy mission to unite his homeland of Alethkar was too narrow in scope. Unless all the nations of Roshar can put Dalinar’s blood-soaked past aside and stand together — and unless Dalinar himself can confront that past — even the restoration of the Knights Radiant will not avert the end of civilization.

Charlaine Harris’s Midnight Texas series is on sale in the UK!

From today until November 11th, Charlaine Harris‘s acclaimed Midnight, Texas series is on sale! Only 99p each in Amazon’s Kindle Autumn sale, this is a great way to try Harris’s work if you haven’t already, and also a great way to complete your collection!

All three books — MIDNIGHT CROSSROAD, DAY SHIFT and NIGHT SHIFT — are published in the UK by Gollancz. Here’s the synopsis for book one, just in case you haven’t seen it before…

Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.

There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).

Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth…

The author’s latest novel, AN EASY DEATH, is also out this week in the UK, published by Piatkus Books.

AN EASY DEATH in the UK…

The wait is finally over! Charlaine Harris‘s new novel, AN EASY DEATH is out now in the UK! The eBook edition is, anyway – the print edition will follow later this week. The first in a new series starring mercenary Lizbeth “Gunnie” Rose, it is published by Piatkus in the UK. Here’s the synopsis…

Set in a fractured United States, in the southwestern country now known as Texoma, this is a world where magic is acknowledged but mistrusted. Battered by a run across the border to Mexico, gunslinger Lizbeth Rose takes a job offer from a pair of Russian wizards.

She may be young, but Gunnie Rose has acquired a fearsome reputation and the wizards are at a desperate crossroads, even if they won’t admit it. They’re searching frantically to locate the only man whose blood they believe can save their tsar’s life.

As the trio journey through an altered America, they’re set upon by enemies. It’s clear that a powerful force does not want them to succeed in their mission. Lizbeth Rose is a gunnie who has never failed a client, but her oath will test all of her skills and resolve to get them all out alive.

The novel has already been racking up some pretty great reviews, too…

‘In this fast-paced thriller fueled by magic and gunslinging, no one can be trusted. Harris’s vividly detailed story will leave readers enthralled with the fascinating setting and a heroine who’s sure to be a new fan favorite.’Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

‘Narrator Lizbeth is a pragmatic young woman with an unshakeable work ethic who doesn’t let her gender define her and isn’t given to emotional outbursts, but there are just enough moments to remind readers that the loss of those she loves, and her desire to keep those she has left safe, is ultimately her driving force. Harris…populates her gritty, immersive new world with genuinely interesting characters, and chilling moments of horror—of both the human and supernatural kind—punctuate this relentlessly paced road trip. A refreshing and cinematic, weird Western starring a sharp-as-nails, can-do heroine. Harris’ many fans will surely follow Gunnie Rose anywhere.’Kirkus

‘Immersive, involving, suspenseful, and intriguing, with a main character you’ll love.’ — Lee Child

‘Harris has a remarkable talent for world building… In all, this looks like another winning series from a sure-bet author.’Booklist

Out Now: THREE GREAT NOVELS by R.A. Lafferty…

An omnibus edition collecting THREE GREAT NOVELS by R.A. Lafferty is out now, published by Gollancz. Including the acclaimed novels SPACE CHANTEY, FOURTH MANSIONS and PAST MASTER, here’s the omnibus’s synopsis…

Three early masterpieces from one of science fiction’s great stylists.

Acclaimed, as one of the most original voices in modern literature, Raphael Aloysius Lafferty drew more from traditional oral storytelling techniques than from the usual pulp roots of SF. His inventive style and fondness for tall tales marked him out from his contemporaries, and writers of the calibre of Harlan Ellison, Neil Gaiman and Gene Wolfe acknowledge him as a major influence and force in the field. His fiction has garnered numerous award wins and nominations and he has been given the prestigious SFWA Grand Master Award and the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

This volume contains three of his early novels: the Hugo- and Nebula-shortlisted Past Master, space opera re-telling of The Odyssey, Space Chantey, and Fourth Mansions, also shortlisted for the Nebula.

A whole host of Lafferty’s novels have also been made available in the UK as eBooks (including the three in the omnibus), published by Gollancz’s SF Gateway. We’ve including the novels’ individual synopses, below.

SPACE CHANTEY, originally published in 1968…

Set in the far future, Space Chantey chronicles the adventures of Space Captain Roadstrum and his crew, on a journey through galaxies resonant with myth and peril as Roadstrum valiantly battles to return across the cosmos to Big Tulsa, the Capital of the World, and to his wife and young son Tele-Max.

FOURTH MANSIONS, originally published in 1969…

Seven very special people blending to create a higher form of humanity…

A laughing man living alone on a mountain top, guarding the world…

The returnees, men who live again and again, century after century…

A dog-ape plappergeist who can be seen only from the corner of the eye…

And a young man named Foley, very much like you or me, who begins to find out about these people and these things, and how they are shaping the destiny of the world…

‘Of all the contemporary authors generally considered to be part of the fantasy and science fiction genres, Lafferty is without doubt the most original.’ Supernatural Fiction Writers on FOURTH MANSIONS

PAST MASTER, also originally published in 1968…

The golden planet of Astrobe, made in the image of Utopia, now faced a crisis which could destroy it forever; and yet, no one could understand it: In a world where wealth & comfort were free to everyone, why did so many desert the golden cities for the slums of Cathead and the Barrio? Why did they turn away from the Astrobe dream and seek lives of bone-crushing work, squalor and disease?

The rulers of Astrobe didn’t know, so they sought in humankind’s past for a leader who could give them the answers. They brought to life the one man out of history who would most want to destroy Astrobe!

‘Marvelously inventive… Profound wit and high adventure.’Roger Zelazny on PAST MASTER

‘As with everything the man writes, the wind of imagination blows strongly, with the happy difference that in a novel he can reach full  gale-force. Lafferty defies categorization; his work is unlike anyone else’s. This is a great galloping madman of a novel, drenched in sound and color.’Harlan Ellison on PAST MASTER

ICYMI: Ari Marmell’s IN TRUTH AND CLAW is out now in the UK!

Published in North America a couple of weeks ago, Ari Marmell‘s IN TRUTH AND CLAW is now available in the UK! The fourth novel in the author’s Mick Oberon series of urban fantasy mysteries, it is published by Titan Books in both territories. Here’s the synopsis…

Mick Oberon may look like just another 1930s private detective, but beneath the fedora and the overcoat, he’s got pointy ears and he’s packing a wand. A series of brutal murders is sweeping Chicago, baffling both the local police and the Seelie Court, who sense an aura of corruption and death has touched Mick himself. When Mick’s associates become targets, and a vampire appears in his office, Mick is drawn into his most dangerous hunt yet.

The first three novels in the series are also published in the UK and US by Titan: HOT LEAD, COLD IRONHALLOW POINT and DEAD TO RITES. Here are some of the reviews the series has received so far…

HOT LEAD, COLD IRON is as hard boiled a detective drama as anything written by Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler or Mickey Spillane, and Marmell captures the vernacular of the period wonderfully… HOT LEAD, COLD IRON could easily have been published in any one of the popular pulp detective magazines of the ’30s and yet it’s pace and characterizations are undoubtedly contemporary… Ari Marmell will soon be crowned the foremost purveyor of Macabre Noir.’ — Starburst

‘In this gripping fantastical investigation, Marmell (The Goblin Corps) creates an engaging world and an unlikely hero…The potent mix of gangsters, magic, Fae politics, and a strega on the warpath makes for a ride that never touches the brakes. Marmell expertly maximizes the thrills, leaving the reader with a lingering desire for a magic wand and a glass of warm milk.’ — Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) on HOT LEAD, COLD IRON

‘It’s a fascinating concept, and a solid foundation for yet another gripping story… a highly enjoyable ride; the writing takes its reader into the heart of every scene…It’s a great read, reinvigorating the tropes of two genres to enable them to rise above cliché status. With final revelations that imply a larger conspiracy, it seems Marmell has plenty more up his sleeve for his hero, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for Mick Oberon in the future.‘ — Starburst on HALLOW POINT

‘Irresistibly entertaining… It’s among the best urban fantasy novels I’ve ever read.’ — Rising Shadow on HALLOW POINT

‘The third entry… in the inventive series about a 1930s private eye who also happens to be one of the Fae mixes supernatural investigations and Al Capone’s Chicago for an irresistible combo.’ — Library Journal on DEAD TO RITES

‘It’s the kind of novel that reads easily, and that just as easily holds your attention from the first page to the last, making you regret the story is over and making you long for the next adventure of the characters you’ve come to love over the course of this tale… Fun, quirky and most importantly: slightly different from what you would traditionally expect in the genre.’ The Gatehouse on DEAD MAN WALKING

‘I recommend VERY IMPORTANT CORPSES if you are looking for a fun, scary, and entertaining read before bedtime.’ Fantasy Book Review

‘In Green’s entertaining fourth Ishmael Jones Mystery… Ishmael, an extraterrestrial in human form and ace British secret agent, and his earthly companion, Penny Belcourt, travel from London to Cardavan House (“a really long way from anywhere”) at the behest of the Colonel, Ishmael’s contact at his principal employer, the super-secret Organization… The story soon settles into a comfortable country house mystery: when one of the bickering family members is found bludgeoned to death in front of the empty sarcophagus, Ishmael uses his intelligence, phenomenal strength, and exquisite sense of smell to track down who—or what—is responsible. Green once again smoothly blends science fiction with classic detection.’ Publishers Weekly on DEATH SHALL COME
