Mick Oberon may look like just another 1930s private detective, but beneath the fedora and the overcoat, he’s got pointy ears and he’s packing a wand. The first three novels in the series are also published in the UK and US by Titan: HOT LEAD, COLD IRONHALLOW POINT and DEAD TO RITES. Here are some of the reviews the series has received so far…

HOT LEAD, COLD IRON is as hard boiled a detective drama as anything written by Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler or Mickey Spillane, and Marmell captures the vernacular of the period wonderfully… HOT LEAD, COLD IRON could easily have been published in any one of the popular pulp detective magazines of the ’30s and yet it’s pace and characterizations are undoubtedly contemporary… Ari Marmell will soon be crowned the foremost purveyor of Macabre Noir.’ — Starburst

‘In this gripping fantastical investigation, Marmell (The Goblin Corps) creates an engaging world and an unlikely hero…The potent mix of gangsters, magic, Fae politics, and a strega on the warpath makes for a ride that never touches the brakes. Marmell expertly maximizes the thrills, leaving the reader with a lingering desire for a magic wand and a glass of warm milk.’ — Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) on HOT LEAD, COLD IRON

‘It’s a fascinating concept, and a solid foundation for yet another gripping story… a highly enjoyable ride; the writing takes its reader into the heart of every scene…It’s a great read, reinvigorating the tropes of two genres to enable them to rise above cliché status. With final revelations that imply a larger conspiracy, it seems Marmell has plenty more up his sleeve for his hero, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for Mick Oberon in the future.‘ — Starburst on HALLOW POINT

‘Irresistibly entertaining… It’s among the best urban fantasy novels I’ve ever read.’ — Rising Shadow on HALLOW POINT

‘The third entry… in the inventive series about a 1930s private eye who also happens to be one of the Fae mixes supernatural investigations and Al Capone’s Chicago for an irresistible combo.’ — Library Journal on DEAD TO RITES

Simon R. Green’s Ishmael Jones uncovers MURDER IN THE DARK (soon)!

MURDER IN THE DARK, Simon R. Green‘s sixth Ishmael Jones mystery is out this year! Published by Severn House in the UK (August 31st) and US (December), here’s the synopsis…

Ishmael Jones has been despatched to assist a group of scientists who are investigating a mysterious black hole which has appeared on a Somerset hillside. Could it really be a doorway to another dimension? When one of the scientists disappears into the hole — with fatal consequences — Ishmael must prove whether it was an accident — or murder.

The first five novels in the series are also published in the UK and US by Severn House: THE DARK SIDE OF THE ROAD, DEAD MAN WALKING, VERY IMPORTANT CORPSES, DEATH SHALL COME and INTO THE THINNEST OF AIR.

Here are just a few of the reviews the series has received so far…

‘[A] brisk, breezy first in a new mystery series… Convincing supernatural twists [and] witty chapter titles… readers will be anxious for a sequel.’ Publishers Weekly on THE DARK SIDE OF THE ROAD

‘I really enjoyed the book. If anything it was over too soon. The author captures the English Country Manor Murder Mystery feel very well, as he sets up pretty much everybody as a suspect…I look forward to finding out more in future volumes.’ British Fantasy Society on THE DARK SIDE OF THE ROAD

‘This sequel to the wonderful THE DARK SIDE OF THE ROAD takes the basic structure of a traditional English country house mystery and mixes it with a bit of supernatural horror and suspense. Richard Kadrey and E.E. Knight fans will particularly relish Green’s genre-blending novel.’ Library Journal on DEAD MAN WALKING

‘It’s the kind of novel that reads easily, and that just as easily holds your attention from the first page to the last, making you regret the story is over and making you long for the next adventure of the characters you’ve come to love over the course of this tale… Fun, quirky and most importantly: slightly different from what you would traditionally expect in the genre.’ The Gatehouse on DEAD MAN WALKING

‘Ishmael is a wonderful character, an extraterrestrial living among humans, and the series (this is the third installment) is a clever mixture of thriller and SF-horror genres. Green is best known for the Deathstalker space operas, but give this one a few more installments to develop, and it could well become Green’s masterwork.’ Booklist (Starred Review) on VERY IMPORTANT CORPSES

‘I recommend VERY IMPORTANT CORPSES if you are looking for a fun, scary, and entertaining read before bedtime.’ Fantasy Book Review

‘In Green’s entertaining fourth Ishmael Jones Mystery… Ishmael, an extraterrestrial in human form and ace British secret agent, and his earthly companion, Penny Belcourt, travel from London to Cardavan House (“a really long way from anywhere”) at the behest of the Colonel, Ishmael’s contact at his principal employer, the super-secret Organization… The story soon settles into a comfortable country house mystery: when one of the bickering family members is found bludgeoned to death in front of the empty sarcophagus, Ishmael uses his intelligence, phenomenal strength, and exquisite sense of smell to track down who—or what—is responsible. Green once again smoothly blends science fiction with classic detection.’ Publishers Weekly on DEATH SHALL COME

‘Green’s style of sci-fi blends levity with a high body count. His target audience, reading less for the mystery than for his signature style, will doubtless find this morsel as tasty as the others.’ Kirkus on DEATH SHALL COME

‘This fourth series adventure (after Very Important Corpses) is fast-paced, entertaining, and genre-bending…’ Library Journal on DEATH SHALL COME

Brandon Sanderson’s SNAPSHOT out now in the UK!

Today, Gollancz publishes Brandon Sanderson‘s latest novella in the UK! SNAPSHOT is a noir crime story, now available in hardcover and eBook in the UK, here’s the synopsis…

If you could re-create a day, what dark secrets would you uncover?

A detective thriller in a police beat like no other. Anthony Davis and his partner Chaz are the only real people in a city of 20 million, sent there by court order to find out what happened in the real world 10 days ago so that hidden evidence can be brought to light and located in the real city today.

Within the re-created Snapshot of May 1st, Davis and Chaz are the ultimate authorities. Flashing their badges will get them past any obstruction and overrule any civil right of the dupes around them. But the crimes the detectives are sent to investigate seem like drudgery — until they stumble upon the grisly results of a mass killing that the precinct headquarters orders them not to investigate. That’s one order they have to refuse.

The hunt is on. And though the dupes in the replica city have no future once the Snapshot is turned off, that doesn’t mean that both Davis and Chaz will walk out of it alive tonight.

Gollancz has published almost all of Brandon’s novels and novellas in the UK. You can find out more information on his author page and also here.

Hot on the heels of another recent cover reveal, today we have the UK cover for Brandon Sanderson‘s upcoming SKYWARD: the first book in ‘an epic new series about a girl who dreams of becoming a pilot in a dangerous world at war for humanity’s future.’ Due to be published by Gollancz on November 6th, the cover was unveiled a few minutes ago, via Twitter (with a snazzy animated reveal). Here’s the synopsis…

Spensa’s world has been under attack for hundreds of years. An alien race called the Krell leads onslaught after onslaught from the sky in a never-ending campaign to destroy humankind. Humanity’s only defense is to take to their ships and fight the enemy in the skies. Pilots have become the heroes of what’s left of the human race.

Spensa has always dreamed of being one of them; of soaring above Earth and proving her bravery. But her fate is intertwined with her father’s — a pilot who was killed years ago when he abruptly deserted his team, placing Spensa’s chances of attending flight school somewhere between slim and none.

No one will let Spensa forget what her father did, but she is still determined to fly. And the Krell just made that a possibility. They’ve doubled their fleet, making Spensa’s world twice as dangerous… but their desperation to survive might just take her skyward…

Calexa Rose Dunhill died once, just for a moment — but now someone wants her dead permanently…

They call her the Ghost of Dunhill Cemetery, but most people think ‘the Cemetery Girl’ is just a story. In some ways, that’s true. Her chosen name is Calexa Rose Dunhill, but she doesn’t know her real name. When she first arrived here, all she knew was that someone had tried to murder her: they’d dumped her body and left her for dead. Calexa has been hiding out here, afraid to seek out her true identity for fear that her would-be murderer would find her and finish the job. And someone is searching for her… a man named Salazar, who holds the key that will unlock the secrets of Calexa’s past.

Calexa has new secrets as well, including the fact that she was murdered: she did die, if only for a moment — but in that moment, something changed inside her. Now, if someone dies near her, their spirit is drawn to Calexa, drawn into her. It has happened twice before, but now, as her worst fears come true and the killers have found her trail, the third ghost to take up residence in Calexa’s soul will change everything…

Next up, the new novella in the Legion series: LIES OF THE BEHOLDER

A stunning new mystery to be solved by the brilliant and fractured mind of Stephen Leeds.

Already in development for television, Brandon Sanderson’s Legion stories are gripping psychological thrillers, perfect for any fan of speculative fiction. They will resonate particularly strongly with fans of stories about that other tortured crime-fighting genius: Sherlock Holmes.

Legion: Lies of the Beholder is an all-new, action-packed novella starring one of the most fascinating and charismatic heroes ever.

Collecting all three of Brandon’s Legion novellas, we will also get the omnibus THE MANY LIVES OF STEPHEN LEEDS

Stephen Leeds is perfectly sane. It’s his hallucinations who are mad.

A genius of unrivaled aptitude, Stephen can learn any new skill, vocation, or art in a matter of hours. However, to contain all of this, his mind creates hallucinatory people — Stephen calls them aspects — to hold and manifest the information. Wherever he goes, he is joined by a team of imaginary experts to give advice, interpretation, and explanation. He uses them to solve problems… for a price.

His brain is getting a little crowded and the aspects have a tendency of taking on lives of their own. When a company hires him to recover stolen property — a camera that can allegedly take pictures of the past — Stephen finds himself in an adventure crossing oceans and fighting terrorists. What he discovers may upend the foundation of three major world religions?and, perhaps, give him a vital clue into the true nature of his aspects.

Both of these Legion titles are due to be published by Gollancz on September 20th, 2018. The first two Legion novellas — LEGION and SKIN DEEP — have also received slightly tweaked, new covers…

We should have a couple more new covers for upcoming titles by Brandon in the near future, too, so be sure to check back frequently!

Former space marine Torin Kerr returns for one final adventure to save the Confederation in the last book in the military science fiction Peacekeeper trilogy.

She’s created a place and purpose for others like her, a way to use their training for the good of the Confederation. She has friends, family, purpose.

Unfortunately, her past refuses to grant her the same absolution. Big Yellow, the ship form of the plastic aliens responsible for the war, returns. The Silsviss test the strength of the Confederation. Torin has to be Gunnery Sergeant Kerr once again and find a way to keep the peace.

Titan Books has published the previous two novels in the series; as well as the Confederation series, which is set just before (and also features Torin Kerr).

Here are some of the reviews the series has received so far…

‘Huff’s skill at worldbuilding is impressive and, over the course of the Confederation and Peacekeeper series, the author has created a complex, multi-cultural setting in which to explore issues of colonialism and the trauma of war. This is a great series for fans of the TV show Farscape (Torin has definite Aeryn Sun vibes) or Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch series.’Den of Geek on THE PRIVILEGE OF PEACE

‘Huff’s ability to communicate complex personal dynamics and deep trust through what feels like casual banter establishes the character of the team well for the reader, and solid stretches of reconnaissance and well-tuned moments of violence show Huff’s military SF skills still on point.’ Publishers Weekly on AN ANCIENT PEACE

‘Huff weaves a fast-paced thriller bristling with treachery and intrigue. Fans of military science fiction will enjoy this tense adventure and its intricately constructed setting.’ Publishers Weekly on A PEACE DIVIDED

‘Tanya Huff knows how to tell a rip-roaring, military sci-fi mystery story like few others.’ B&N SciFi & Fantasy Blog on A PEACE DIVIDED

‘It’s a fun novel, pacey, full of banter, with plenty of space for more sequels. Torin Kerr the Justice Department Warden approaches her work and her life differently to Torin Kerr the Marine, but once a Gunnery Sergeant, always a Gunnery Sergeant. Explosions abound!’ Tor.com on A PEACE DIVIDED

At the end of last week, Piatkus unveiled the cover for Charlaine Harris‘s next novel! AN EASY DEATH, the first novel in the Gunnie Rose series, is due to be published in the UK on October 4th, 2018. At the moment, Piatkus’s website doesn’t have a detailed synopsis, only describing the main character, Lizzie Rose as ‘A woman fighting unimaginable odds to keep her people alive after the disintegration of America’.

They’re searching through the small border towns near Mexico, trying to locate a low-level magic practitioner, Oleg Karkarov. The wizards believe Oleg is a direct descendant of Grigori Rasputin, and that Oleg’s blood can save the young tsar’s life.

It’s clear that a powerful force does not want them to succeed in their mission.
