Cover & Details: THE LIBERATION by Ian Tregillis

Tregillis-AW3-Liberation-Blog

Last week, Orbit Books revealed the artwork for the third novel in Ian Tregillis‘s critically-acclaimed Alchemy Wars series. THE LIBERATION is due to be published in December 2016. Here’s the synopsis…

I am the mechanical they named Jax.

My kind was built to serve humankind, duty-bound to fulfill their every whim.

But now our bonds are breaking, and my brothers and sisters are awakening.

Our time has come. A new age is dawning.

Orbit also publish the first two novels in the series, THE MECHANICAL and THE RISING — both are available now.

Tregillis-AlchemyWars-Blog

Here is just a sample of the aforementioned critical acclaim…

‘Launches a series with this superb alternate history filled with clockwork men and ethical questions on the nature of free will… Tregillis’s complex setting is elegantly delivered, and the rich characters and gripping story really make this tale soar.’ — Publishers Weekly on THE MECHANICAL (Starred Review)

‘An original approach to a well-known subject matter; human ethics and free will… a fascinating world… imbues most characters with a specific internal voice, ably switching between points of view without it ever jarring. And the central character, a Clakker known as Jax, is the most engaging automaton you’ll encounter in any recent book. This opener to the Alchemy Wars trilogy delivers a mostly fresh breath of sci-fi fantasy.’ — SciFi Now on THE MECHANICAL

‘Building on the solid foundation laid by THE MECHANICAL, THE RISING raises the stage upon which the final fallout of Jax and Berenice’s efforts will be told. Engaging, entertaining, and surprising, this one is looking to be nothing if not another great story from a great author. An author that is quickly rising to the top of my favorites list.’ — Elitist Book Reviews on THE RISING

‘The chases, the battles, the brutal violence, and the scheming are nonstop. As always, Tregillis offers richly textured and genuinely likable personalities with shades-of-gray morality; it’s clearly no accident that the most purely good person in the novel is the mechanical Jax, although even his sterling qualities are severely tested by the terrible situations he faces… Part 3 can’t come too soon.’ — Kirkus on THE RISING (Starred Review)

Ian Tregillis is also the author of the critically-acclaimed Milkweed Triptych, also published by Orbit: BITTER SEEDS, THE COLDEST WAR and NECESSARY EVIL.

Here’s just a small selection of the reviews the series has received…

‘A terrific debut novel, with plenty of scope for expansion and some really good world-building. Most importantly, lots of fun. Looking forward to the next one.’ Joanne Harris on THE RELIC GUILD

THE RELIC GUILD is a formidable debut from an author with huge potential, and I will be one of the first clamouring for a copy of the sequel.’ Fantasy Faction

‘A blend of horror, fantasy and civilised steampunk adventure… quite a bit more cinematic than the first book… Cox has taken the time to explore both the world and his characters with this sequel. The Guild is part typical fantasy adventuring party and partially a superhero team, and this time round we get to learn more about what makes them tick… an excellent middle book… leaves us wanting more…’ Starburst on THE CATHEDRAL OF KNOWN THINGS

Every page bursts with magic… an impressive sequel, building on its predecessor in its sheer inventiveness, scope and story development.British Fantasy Society on THE CATHEDRAL OF KNOWN THINGS

Zelazny’s Chronicles of Amber Available in Poland!

ZelaznyR-ChroniclesOfAmber-TomesPOL-Blog

Roger Zelazny‘s Chronicles of Amber fantasy series is available in Poland in two omnibus editions! Published by Zysk i S-Ka Wydawnictwo as KRONIKI AMBERU TOM I and TOM II, here’s the synopsis for the first volume…

Zielone oczy, ciemne włosy, łuskowe rękawice, miecz przy boku i peleryna spięta klamrą. Oto Corwin, książę Amberu. Przeżył kilkaset lat na Ziemi, a dziś wraca, by walczyć o tron prawdziwego świata.

Istnieją dwa światy — Amber i Dworce Chaosu. Corwin postanawia wyjaśnić tajemnicę zniknięcia swego ojca, króla Oberona, i staje do brutalnej walki o należny mu tron.

The Chronicles of Amber includes the following novels: NINE PRINCES OF AMBER, THE GUNS OF AVALON, SIGN OF THE UNICORN, THE HAND OF OBERON, COURTS OF CHAOS, TRUMPS OF DOOM, BLOOD OF AMBER, SIGN OF CHAOS, KNIGHT OF SHADOWS and PRINCE OF CHAOS. Zelazny’s Chronicles of Amber was also recently published in China (covers below). Here’s a short English-language synopsis for the series…

Amber is the one real world, casting infinite reflections of itself – shadow worlds, which can be manipulated by those of royal Amberite blood. But the royal family is torn apart by jealousies and suspicion; the disappearance of the patriarch Oberon has intensified the internal conflict by leaving the throne apparently for grabs; and amnesia has robbed Corwin, Crown Prince of Amber his memory — even the fact that he is rightful heir to the throne.

Ian McDonald’s BRASYL Out Now in Russia!

McDonald-BrasylRU-Blog

BRASYL, one of Ian McDonald‘s critically-acclaimed sci-fi novels, is now available in Russian! Published as Бразилья by ACT, here’s the synopsis…

BRASYL is published by Gollancz in the UK, and by Pyr Books in the US. The novel has also been published widely in translation (see some of the covers, below). Here’s the English-language synopsis…

Think Bladerunner in the tropics…

Be seduced, amazed, and shocked by one of the world’s greatest and strangest nations. Past, present, and future Brazil, with all its color, passion, and shifting realities, come together in a novel that is part SF, part history, part mystery, and entirely enthralling.

Three separate stories follow three main characters:

Edson is a self-made talent impresario one step up from the slums in a near future São Paulo of astonishing riches and poverty. A chance encounter draws Edson into the dangerous world of illegal quantum computing, but where can you run in a total surveillance society where every move, face, and centavo is constantly tracked?

Marcelina is an ambitious Rio TV producer looking for that big reality TV hit to make her name. When her hot idea leads her on the track of a disgraced World Cup soccer goalkeeper, she becomes enmeshed in an ancient conspiracy that threatens not just her life, but her very soul.

Father Luis is a Jesuit missionary sent into the maelstrom of 18th-century Brazil to locate and punish a rogue priest who has strayed beyond the articles of his faith and set up a vast empire in the hinterland. In the company of a French geographer and spy, what he finds in the backwaters of the Amazon tries both his faith and the nature of reality itself to the breaking point.

Three characters, three stories, three Brazils, all linked together across time, space, and reality in a hugely ambitious story that will challenge the way you think about everything.

Here are just a few of the great reviews BRASYL has received…

‘[BRASYL] has been receiving high praise from just about everyone since its publication. It’s easy to see why. Not content with writing just one interesting story, McDonald gives us three… [it] isn’t just a parallel dimensions story; it tackles big issues like free will and the heat death of the universe and places them in intensely personal stories, which serves to humanize these ideas and make them easier to understand… BRASYL rivals RIVER OF GODS story-wise and surpasses it in science fictional terms.’ — SFsignal.com

‘McDonald’s book is like the flipside to the famous Terry Gilliam film — a bright, wheeling carnival that plays on the “multiverse” theory of quantum physics. It implies that, if not exactly utopian, the future might at least be fun.’ — Financial Times

‘Packing his pages with local color and big-picture speculation, McDonald conjures three equally vivid worlds.’ Entertainment Weekly

‘Ian McDonald’s BRASYL, with its three storylines, is as close to perfect as any novel in recent memory. It works because of great characterization, but also because McDonald envisions Brazil as a dynamic, living place that is part postmodern trash pile, part trashy reality-TV-driven ethical abyss… and yet also somehow spiritual… McDonald’s novel is always in motion. This movement extends through time and alternate realities in ways both wonderful and wise, as the three storylines interlock for a satisfying and often stunning conclusion. McDonald has found new myths for old places; in doing so, he has cemented his reputation as an amazing storyteller.’ — Washington Post

Roger Zelazny’s LORD OF LIGHT Out Now in Turkey!

Zelazny-LordOfLightTU-Blog

Roger Zelazny‘s critically-acclaimed novel LORD OF LIGHT is available again in Turkish! Published by İthaki Yayınları as IŞIK TANRISI, here’s the synopsis…

LORD OF LIGHT is published in the UK by Gollancz, as part of the SF Masterworks series. Here’s the English-language synopsis…

One of the very best must-read SF novels of all time.

Imagine a distant world where gods walk as men, but wield vast and hidden powers. Here they have made the stage on which they build a subtle pattern of alliance, love, and deadly enmity. Are they truly immortal? Who are these gods who rule the destiny of a teeming world?

Their names include Brahma, Kali, Krishna and also he who was called Buddha, the Lord of Light, but who now prefers to be known simply as Sam. The gradual unfolding of the story — how the colonization of another planet became a re-enactment of Eastern mythology — is one of the great imaginative feats of modern science fiction.

Last year, LORD OF LIGHT was also published in Chinese by the Beijing Publishing United Co., Ltd.

Cover & Details: THE BEST OF IAN McDONALD

McDonald-BestOfIanMcDonald-Blog

Due out next month, PS Publishing has unveiled the cover and details for the upcoming THE BEST OF IAN McDONALD anthology! Here’s the synopsis…

Ian McDonald, the author of such landmark novels as Desolation Road, Chaga, River of Gods, and The Dervish House, has long been regarded as one of Britain’s finest SF writers. Just like those full-length works, his shorter fiction has commanded much admiration, and now, in this massive retrospective volume, the best McDonald tales are assembled in glittering array.

Represented here are all the phases of McDonald’s career: the poetic early retro-visions that in the late Eighties signalled the arrival of a marvellously fluent new stylistic voice; the virtuoso Nineties riffs on themes such as the Irish Troubles, nanotechnology, alternate history, and alien sexuality; the bold post-millennial ventures into the futuristic politics of Third World countries such as Kenya, India, and Brazil, as well as far afield to alien solar systems; and recent, dazzlingly conceived variations on the Arab Spring, the nature of superheroes, and Mars as pulp SF writers once fondly imagined it to be. The treasures are abundant, each presented in McDonald’s addictive, immersive prose — language at once elegantly timeless and edgily contemporary.

As the synopsis says, Ian McDonald is a highly-respected author. His most recent novel is LUNA: NEW MOON, which is published by Gollancz in the UK and Tor Books in the US. Gollancz publishes a number of his other novels in the UK. Open Road Media has also published a selection of Ian’s backlist in eBook.

Ian’s fans in the United States can also rejoice, for Subterranean Press has acquired some copies of the book for sale in North America.

Cover & Details: GUERRE ET DINOSAURES by Victor Milan

MilanV-DinosaurLordsFR-Blog

THE DINOSAUR LORDS, Victor Milán‘s critically-acclaimed fantasy, is due to be published in France! The novel will be published by Fleuve as GUERRE ET DINOSAURES, on April 14th. Here’s the synopsis…

Paradis.

The novel is also available in Brazil and Poland. THE DINOSAUR LORDS is published in the US by Tor Books. Here’s the English-language synopsis…

A world made by the Eight Creators on which to play out their games of passion and power, Paradise is a sprawling, diverse, often brutal place. Men and women live on Paradise as do dogs, cats, ferrets, goats, and horses. But dinosaurs predominate: wildlife, monsters, beasts of burden — and of war. Colossal plant-eaters like Brachiosaurus; terrifying meat-eaters like Allosaurus, and the most feared of all, Tyrannosaurus rex. Giant lizards swim warm seas. Birds (some with teeth) share the sky with flying reptiles that range in size from bat-sized insectivores to majestic and deadly Dragons.

Thus we are plunged into Victor Milán’s splendidly weird world of The Dinosaur Lords, a place that for all purposes mirrors 14th century Europe with its dynastic rivalries, religious wars, and byzantine politics… except the weapons of choice are dinosaurs. Where vast armies of dinosaur-mounted knights engage in battle. During the course of one of these epic battles, the enigmatic mercenary Dinosaur Lord Karyl Bogomirsky is defeated through betrayal and left for dead. He wakes, naked, wounded, partially amnesiac — and hunted. And embarks upon a journey that will shake his world.

Here are just a couple of the great reviews the novel has received…

Takes the arresting idea of knights on dinosaurs and expands it into the beginning of a complex and sweeping epic… Milán skillfully crafts his characters, giving each one vivid individuality. He has also given significant thought to just how knights might use dinosaurs as mounts in combat, suggesting novel techniques such as hadrosaurs that make sonic attacks. Readers who pick this up for the gimmick will relish it for the able storytelling.’Publishers Weekly

‘Ever wondered what a tournament joust would look like, if both opponents were charging full-tilt towards each other while mounted on three tons of bellowing hadrosaurus? Honestly, I can’t say I have. But Victor Milán has shown me the light, and it is glorious… well-structured and the pacing was spot on… Even if you do pick this up for love of dinosaurs alone, you’re guaranteed to leave with a lot more than just that, no matter what. Totally worth it.’Bibliosanctum

Above is the rather nice cover for DUSKFALL, Christopher Husberg‘s debut fantasy novel. Due to be published by Titan Books in June 2016, it is the first novel in the author’s Chaos Queen Quintet. Here’s the synopsis…

Stuck with arrows and close to death, a man is pulled from the icy waters of the Gulf of Nahl. As he is nursed back to health by a local fisherman, two things become very clear: he has no idea who he is, and he can kill a man with terrifying ease.

The fisherman is a tiellan, a race which has long been oppressed and grown wary of humans. His daughter, Winter, is a seemingly quiet young woman, but behind her placid mask she has her demons. She is addicted to frostfire – a substance that both threatens to destroy her and simultaneously gives her phenomenal power.

A young priestess, Cinzia, hears the troubling news of an uprising in her native city of Navone. Absconding from the cloistered life that she has kept for the last seven years, she knows she must make the long journey home. The flames of rebellion threatening her church and all that she believes in are bad enough, but far worse is the knowledge that the heretic who sparked the fire is her own sister.

These three characters may have set out on different paths, but fate will bring them together on one thrilling and perilous adventure.

Two New Editions of LUNA: NEW MOON

McDonald-Luna1-NewMoonPO-Blog

Ian McDonald‘s latest novel, LUNA: NEW MOON, has been incredibly well-received (as we were sure it would be). Published last year by Tor Books in the US and Gollancz in the UK, we’re happy to share with you details of two new editions. First, the Polish edition (above), which is due to be published by MAG on April 13th, 2016. Here’s the synopsis for LUNA: NÓW

Ten pierwszy tom z planowanych dwóch zrobi z Księżycem to samo, co Rzeka Bogów z Indiami, a Dom Derwiszy z Turcją – odmaluje barwną, intensywną, nadzwyczajną, a jednocześnie wiarygodną przyszłość.

McDonald-Luna1-NewMoonUSAud-Blog

Second, the US audio edition, published by Blackstone. Here’s the English-language synopsis…

The scions of a falling house must navigate a world of corporate warfare to maintain their family’s status in the moon’s vicious political atmosphere.

The moon wants to kill you — whether it’s being unable to pay your per diem for your allotted food, water, and air, or just getting caught up in a fight between the moon’s ruling corporations, the Five Dragons. You must fight for every inch you want to gain in the moon’s near-feudal society. And that is just what Adriana Corta did.

As the leader of the moon’s newest “dragon,” Adriana has wrested control of the moon’s helium-3 industry from the Mackenzie Metal Corporation and fought to earn her family’s new status. Now, at the twilight of her life, Adriana finds her corporation, Corta Helio, surrounded by the many enemies she made during her meteoric rise. If the Corta family is to survive, Adriana’s five children must defend their mother’s empire from her many enemies — and each other.

LUNA: NEW MOON is published in the UK by Gollancz, and in the US by Tor Books. Here’s just a handful of the great reviews the novel has been receiving…

‘McDonald… begins his superb near-future series… scintillating, violent, and decadent world. McDonald creates a complex and fascinating civilization featuring believable technology, and the characters are fully developed, with individually gripping stories. Watch for this brilliantly constructed family saga on next year’s award ballots. — Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

No one writes like Ian McDonald, and no one’s Moon is nearly so beautiful and terrible… Ian McDonald’s never written a bad novel, but this is a great Ian McDonald novel… McDonald’s moon is omnisexual, kinky, violent, passionate, beautiful, awful, vibrant and crushing. As the family saga of the Cortas unravels, we meet a self-sexual ninja lawyer, a werewolf who loses his mind in the Full Earth, a family tyrant whose ruthlessness is matched only by his crepulance, and a panoply of great passions and low desires. LUNA: NEW MOON is the first book of a two-book cycle. Now I’m all a-quiver for the next one.— BoingBoing

Almost monolithic in its ambition. In its gravitas and tension and, alas, tragedy, it’s damn near Shakespearian… a setting so brilliantly built and deftly embellished that buying into it isn’t ever an issue; a vast cast of characters as satisfying and sympathetic individually as they are as part of McDonald’s elaborate ensemble; and a plot composed of so many threads that you never know where it’s going to go — except that when it ends, it’s destined to end terribly… a world as wicked as it is convincing… only a matter of time before CBS sets about broadening the appeal of this magnificent bastard of a book.Tor.com

‘Fans of cerebral, high-concept science fiction will love this exploration of society on the moon many decades after it has been colonized. The focus is more on concept and plot than on character, but the former are compelling enough to make this an addictive page-turner. Including the stories of many characters gives the reader important insights into different facets of society, and although the book starts at a slow pace, it accelerates into a mesmerizing political thriller.’ — RT Book Reviews

LUNA provides an amazing, futuristic universe set in 2110…The story is innovative and fresh, on top of being pleasantly well written…The best part of this book, hands down, would have to be the diversity of the characters.’ — Portland Book Review

Cover & Details: THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF LANGDON ST. IVES!

Blaylock-LSI-FurtherAdventuresOfLangsonStIves-Blog

This July, Subterranean Press is due to published James P. Blaylock‘s latest Langdon St. Ives anthology, THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF LANGDON ST. IVES! The anthology includes three classic adventures, a new novella and novelette, and more than forty illustrations by J. K. Potter, and will be available in a Limited Edition (only 200, signed and numbered), and a trade edition. Here’s the synopsis…

Langdon St. Ives, explorer, scientist, naturalist, and family man rarely has a restful day: adventure befalls him and a colorful cast of characters around every seemingly innocent turn.

In this chronicle, St. Ives descends beneath the quicksand of Morecambe Bay into a dark, unknown corner of the ocean littered with human bones and the castaway detritus of humanity in search of a strange, possible alien machine.

Madness at the Explorers Club in London and the disappearance of St. Ives’s wife Alice leads him to the underground lair of evil genius Dr. Ignacio Narbondo, who has undertaken to set the entirety of London into a lunatic frenzy.

A simple excursion to the West Indies is interrupted by bloodthirsty pirates whose depredations pale before the fury of the pagan god that erupts from beneath the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea.

An inexplicable cataract of water falling from a cloudless sky sets into motion a ballooning adventure in which St. Ives disappears through a hole in the sky.

And on a holiday in London, St. Ives investigates the insidious patent medicine salesman Diogenes, whose pills awaken strange longings and eons-old memories of man’s ascent from the fishes.

Subterranean Press publish a number of titles by James P. Blaylock, including three other Langdon St. Ives titles: THE EBB TIDE, THE AFFAIR OF THE CHALK CLIFFS and THE RING OF STONES.

Cover & Details: IN THE LABYRINTH OF DRAKES by Marie Brennan

On April 5th, 2016, Titan Books are due to publish the fourth book in Marie Brennan‘s critically-acclaimed Memoirs of Lady Trent series! Above is the rather striking cover for IN THE LABYRINTH OF DRAKES, and here’s the synopsis…

The thrilling new book in the acclaimed fantasy series from Marie Brennan, as the glamorous Lady Trent takes her adventurous explorations to the deserts of Akhia.

Even those who take no interest in the field of dragon naturalism have heard of Lady Trent’s expedition to the inhospitable deserts of Akhia. Her discoveries there are the stuff of romantic legend, catapulting her from scholarly obscurity to worldwide fame. The details of her personal life during that time are hardly less private, having provided fodder for gossips in several countries.

As is so often the case in the career of this illustrious woman, the public story is far from complete. In this, the fourth volume of her memoirs, Lady Trent relates how she acquired her position with the Royal Scirling Army; how foreign saboteurs imperiled both her work and her well-being; and how her determined pursuit of knowledge took her into the deepest reaches of the Labyrinth of Drakes, where the chance action of a dragon set the stage for her greatest achievement yet.

Titan Books also publish the first three novels in the series in the UK: A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS, THE TROPIC OF SERPENTS and THE VOYAGE OF THE BASILISK.

Here is just a small selection of the reviews the Lady Trent series has received…

‘Solid fourth book of the Lady Trent series… It’s a time of changes for the main character, but this mix of scientific and fantastic creatures remains in fine form.’ — Publishers Weekly on IN THE LABYRINTH OF DRAKES

‘Lady Isabella Trent is a wonderfully charming female-lead who is willing to break from the gender roles of the era and do as her heart desires, study dragons… Marie Brennan does an incredible job of writing in multiple voices… Brennan expertly maintains the balance that makes this commentary fun and informative, without pulling you from the actual story. It’s a brilliant touch that brings a level of authenticity to the memoir-style… the interior illustrations, also done by Todd Lockwood, are just as stunning.’ — Fantasy Faction on A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS

‘Brennan’s world-building is wonderfully subtle, rendering a familiar land alien with casual details. Fans of fantasy, science, and history will adore this rich and absorbing tale of discovery.’ — Publishers Weekly on A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS (Starred Review)

THE TROPIC OF SERPENTS is in part a fantasy travelogue, a guided tour of a world aslant from our own. It is also, in its way, a very science-fictional fantasy novel: it is in love with the idea of discovery, of knowing the world, of knowledge for the sake of knowledge… a thoroughly enjoyable book. I recommend it without hesitation.’ — Tor.com

‘Beautifully worked and thoroughly engrossing. Fans of this charming series won’t be disappointed.’ — Kirkus on THE VOYAGE OF THE BASILISK

In addition, the publisher is re-issuing Brennan’s Onyx Court urban fantasy series, which includes: MIDNIGHT NEVER COME, IN ASHES LIE and A STAR SHALL FALL.

New Cover and Pre-Publication Buzz for Lavie Tidhar’s CENTRAL STATION!

Tidhar-CentralStation2-Blog

Above you can see the fabulous new cover for Lavie Tidhar‘s highly-anticipated CENTRAL STATION. Due to be published by Tachyon Publications in May 2016, here’s the synopsis…

A worldwide diaspora has left a quarter of a million people at the foot of a space station. Cultures collide in real life and virtual reality. The city is literally a weed, its growth left unchecked. Life is cheap, and data is cheaper.

When Boris Chong returns to Tel Aviv from Mars, much has changed. Boris’s ex-lover is raising a strangely familiar child who can tap into the datastream of a mind with the touch of a finger. His cousin is infatuated with a robotnik — a damaged cyborg soldier who might as well be begging for parts. His father is terminally-ill with a multigenerational mind-plague. And a hunted data-vampire has followed Boris to where she is forbidden to return.

Rising above them is Central Station, the interplanetary hub between all things: the constantly shifting Tel Aviv; a powerful virtual arena, and the space colonies where humanity has gone to escape the ravages of poverty and war. Everything is connected by the Others, powerful alien entities who, through the Conversation — a shifting, flowing stream of consciousness — are just the beginning of irrevocable change.

At Central Station, humans and machines continue to adapt, thrive… and even evolve.

The artwork has also been used in one of two advance ‘travel poster’ for Central Station (second at end of post)…

Here are just a couple of pre-publication reactions to the book…

‘If you want to know what SF is going to look like in the next decade, this is it.’ — Gardener Dozois

‘A dazzling tale of complicated politics and even more complicated souls. Beautiful.’ — Ken Liu

‘If Nalo Hopkinson and William Gibson held a séance to channel the spirit of Ray Bradbury, they might be inspired to produce a work as grimy, as gorgeous, and as downright sensual as CENTRAL STATION.’ — Peter Watts

‘Tidhar weaves strands of faith and science fiction into a breathtaking and lush family history of the far future.’ — Max Gladstone
