OUTSIDE THE DOG MUSEUM (British Fantasy Award Best Novel winner)…

Recovering from a recent nervous breakdown, Harry Radcliffe, known for his visionary, award-winning architectural marvels that blur the lines between buildings and abstract sculptures, embarks on a unique project in the Middle East: the construction of a Dog Museum commissioned by a powerful royal family there. His journey takes a mystical turn when, after the museum is threatened by an opposing warlord there, the project is moved to a site in the Austrian alps. As construction progresses, uncanny events and figures emerge to both complicate and enhance Radcliffe’s vision.

WHITE APPLES

Vincent Ettrich is a charming carefree man who discovers he has recently died but been mysteriously resurrected. As he tries to piece together the circumstances of his death and the reason for his return, he learns his resurrection is not just a second chance at life but also a pivotal event in a cosmic battle.

Vincent’s lover, Isabelle, plays a crucial role in this mystery. She is pregnant with their child, who is destined to be a key figure in this vast struggle. Their child, however, will only survive if Vincent can protect the delicate balance between life and death. This responsibility forces him to confront his past, his relationships, and the metaphysical forces that govern the universe.

As Vincent uncovers the truth about his resurrection, he encounters a series of enigmatic characters and surreal events that challenge his understanding of reality. The novel delves deeply into themes of love, fate, and the cyclical nature of existence, all while maintaining a dreamlike and haunting atmosphere

GLASS SOUP, a ‘loose sequel’ to WHITE APPLES

The story continues to explore themes of life, death, love, and the metaphysical battle between good and evil.

The novel follows Vincent Ettrich and his lover, Isabelle Neukor, who were central to the plot of White Apples. Having died, Vincent is once again alive, recently resurrected for some mysterious reason. Isabelle, pregnant with their child, discovers that their unborn son is destined to play a crucial role in the cosmic struggle between chaos and order.

The stakes are high as the forces of chaos, represented by a group of powerful and malevolent beings, seek to manipulate the unborn child for their own ends. The narrative weaves through various dimensions and states of existence, blurring the line between the living and the dead. Characters move freely between life and the afterlife, where reality itself seems to be constantly shifting.

In the afterlife, which is depicted as a surreal, dreamlike landscape, Vincent and Isabelle must navigate a series of strange and dangerous encounters. They meet bizarre and memorable characters, each with their own role in the unfolding cosmic drama. Among them is a particularly sinister figure who seeks to disrupt the balance of the universe and plunge everything into chaos.

As the story progresses, the boundary between dreams and reality becomes increasingly porous and dangerous for the couple while they must fight with everything they have to protect their child.

KISSING THE BEEHIVE

The famous novelist Samuel Bayer is stuck in the middle of the first writer’s block he has ever known. Hoping to be inspired, he returns to his hometown for the first time in years to investigate the mystery of a seemingly unsolved murder of a young woman, Pauline Ostrova, whose boyfriend was convicted of the crime and later died in prison. But the further he looks into the crime, Bayer begins to question the validity of the conviction. As he navigates his childhood memories and the eerie atmosphere of his hometown, he becomes increasingly involved in unraveling the truth behind Pauline’s death. Digging deeper into the past, he encounters various characters that shape his understanding of the events surrounding the murder, ultimately leading to a reflection on the nature of truth and the impact of unresolved histories on personal identity.

THE MARRIAGE OF STICKS, which was an August Derleth Award nominee…

The Marriage of Sticks by Jonathan Carroll is a surreal and introspective novel that blends elements of magical realism with psychological drama. The story revolves around Miranda Romanac, a successful and independent woman in her thirties who works in New York City as a dealer of rare books. Despite her career success, Miranda leads a somewhat detached and self-centered life, prioritizing her own needs and desires over meaningful connections with others.

Mirandaa’s life makes an unexpected turn when she encounters Hugh Oakley, an older man with whom she begins a relationship. Hugh is both enigmatic and fascinating. Their relationship is intense and fulfilling in a way she has never experienced.

As the story progresses, Miranda’s life becomes increasingly surreal. She begins to experience strange and unsettling visions, as well as encounters with ghostly figures from her past. These supernatural elements appear to be manifestations of her unresolved guilt and emotional wounds she has inflicted on others throughout her life. One of these encounters is with a woman who claims to be her future self, warning her about the consequences of her choices.

The novel’s title, The Marriage of Sticks, refers to a metaphorical ceremony that represents the union of the past and present, the merging of one’s actions and their consequences. As Miranda delves deeper into her own psyche, she is forced to confront the mistakes she has made, particularly in her relationships with others. The novel explores themes of regret, redemption, and the possibility of change.

THE WOODEN SEA, which was a New York Times Notable Book, and nominated for the World Fantasy and Locus awards…

Frannie McCabe, police chief of Crane’s View, New York discovers a dead three-legged dog in the middle of the street. When he decides to bury it, strange things begin to happen. The dog inexplicably reappears, first in his office and then alive, kicking off a series of bizarre events that make McCabe question both his sanity and reality.

As Frannie navigates these odd occurrences, he encounters a mysterious stranger who seems to know a lot about him and the strange events taking place all around him. This figure leads him on a journey through time, revealing that Frannie is caught in a loop, and that the choices he makes have far-reaching implications not just for his own life, but for the entire town and beyond.

McCabe finds himself grappling with questions about free will, the nature of reality, and the possibility of alternate universes. His journey becomes one of self-discovery, as he uncovers hidden truths about his past, his family, and his future.

In the end, The Wooden Sea leaves readers pondering the mysteries of existence, the choices we make, and the unseen forces that shape our lives.

These six titles join eight others that were published in 2024: THE LAND OF LAUGHS, BONES OF THE MOON, FROM THE TEETH OF ANGELS, THE GHOST IN LOVE, THE WOMAN WHO MARRIED A CLOUD, BATHING THE LION, TEACHING THE DOG TO READ, THE CROWS DINNER.

In The Bookman, World Fantasy Award winner Lavie Tidhar writes a love letter to books, and to the serial literature of the Victorian era: full of hair-breadth escapes and derring-dos, pirates and automatons, assassins and poets, a world in which real life authors mingle freely with their fictional creations – and where nothing is quite as it seems.

The trilogy is also available in audiobook format, published by Graphic Audio, produced with a full cast!

Here are just a few of the great reviews the series has received…

‘Lavie Tidhar’s THE BOOKMAN is simply the best book I’ve read in a long time, and I read a lot of books. If you’re worried that Steampunk has turned into a mere fashion aesthetic, then you’d better read this one. It’s a stunningly imaginative remix of history, technology, literature, and Victorian adventure that’s impossible to put down. The book is immensely smart and readable at the same time. I very much hope that it’s the first of many such books. Buy it.’ — James P. Blaylock

‘Literary figures emerge from the swirling fog, automatons patrol the streets, space probes head for Mars and giant lizards rule over Victorian England. A potent and atmospheric steampunk adventure.’ — Chris Wooding on THE BOOKMAN

‘THE BOOKMAN is a delight, crammed with gorgeous period detail, seat-of-the-pants adventure and fabulous set-pieces.’ — The Guardian

At the same time, the characters never cease to be fascinating and I found myself intrigued by the settings, which become characters in themselves. From the underwater squid-like dwellings of Scab to the Little China of Paris, each location is richly detailed, dripping with nuances and characters which bring it to life. It’s easy to feel “there” along with Milady throughout her journey.’ — SF Signal on CAMERA OBSCURA

‘A very fine addition to the series, and can be enjoyed without having read the others, though you owe it to yourself to read the entire series if well detailed alternate history science fiction is your sort of thing.’ –– Starburst Magazine on THE GREAT GAME

The second novel in the ‘funny, scary and thoroughly entertaining’ Holy Terrors series by Simon R. Green is out in three weeks! Due to be published by Severn House, on February 4th, here’s the synopsis for STONE CERTAINTY

Dare you enter the stone circle…? The world’s most unlikely ghost-busting duo – actress Diana and handsome young bishop Alistair – are back in this spine-tingling paranormal mystery from New York Times bestselling British fantasy author

There are stories about the dilapidated stone circle at Chipping Amesbury, going back centuries. Of people going missing, never to be seen again. Of people found dead inside the circle. Of monsters, and of demons. The villagers may tell the tales with relish to visiting tourists, but a careful observer will notice that there is no transport to the stones, no tours on offer, and the locals stay well away.

Alistair Kincaid, the youngest ever bishop of All Souls Hollow, is an expert in Britain’s ancient stone circles. That’s why, when landowner Sir Neville Chumley announces his plans to restore the circle to its ancient glory, he agrees to take part in a documentary about the project.

Well – that, plus talented actress Diana Hunt is on board. Ever since their last encounter, when the pair of them hunted ghosts and solved a murder, the tabloids have dubbed them the Holy Terrors, and Alistair can’t wait to see her again.

But soon after filming begins, Alistair and Diana are plunged into a terrifying mystery. For the repositioning of the final stone unleashes a series of blood-chilling events that threaten to make them both believe in demons – if, that is, they make it out of the stone circle alive.

The Vinyl Detective returns in April, in UNDERSCORE!

This April, Titan Books are due to publish UNDERSCORE, the highly-anticipated eighth Vinyl Detective novel by Andrew Cartmel! Here’s the synopsis…

Some of the greatest (and grooviest) music ever committed to vinyl has come out of Italy.

And some of the greatest music to come out of Italy can be found on the soundtracks composed for its lurid, gruesome and some might say nonsensical thrillers known as gialli. The maestros who composed for these include Ennio Morricone, Piero Piccioni, Armand Trovajoli…

… And Loretto Loconsole.

No one disputes that Loconsole was a genius, but was he also a murderer?

The composer’s mistress was killed in 1969 while the pair were on location in Cool Britannia for the shoot of lurid giallo Murder in London – also known as Bikini of Blood and sometimes even The Black Dog Murders (don’t ask). There wasn’t enough evidence to lead to a prosecution, but the stink of scandal never went away. Loconsole’s career never recovered, the mastertapes of his work were destroyed and he died with a dark stain on his legacy.

Now, his granddaughter Chloe has come to England to hire the Vinyl Detective. Not only does she want him to find immaculate vinyl copies of all her grandpa’s soundtracks for a series of reissues she’s putting together to resurrect his musical reputation, but she wants him to clear his name too.

Can the Vinyl Detective and the usual gang – Nevada, Tinkler and Agatha – find out the truth of what happened in Swinging London more than half a century ago? Or might there be someone out there who’d prefer the events of the past to be left well alone, and is prepared to kill to keep their secrets safely in the Sixties?

Titan Books also publishes the first seven novels in the series, in the UK and North America: WRITTEN IN DEAD WAX, THE RUN-OUT GROOVE, VICTORY DISC, FLIP BACK, LOW ACTION, ATTACK AND DECAY, and NOISE FLOOR.

Here are just a few of the great reviews the series has received so far…

‘This charming mystery feels as companionable as a leisurely afternoon trawling the vintage shops with a good friend.’ — Kirkus on WRITTEN IN DEAD WAX

‘… fast-paced, lighthearted adventure… marvelously inventive and endlessly fascinating…’ — Publishers Weekly on WRITTEN IN DEAD WAX

‘Author Cartmel has combined the tropes of the several genres into a surprising, refreshing story centered around old-fashioned records… the story delivers multiple chuckles per chapter… Based on this volume, the series will be a hit.’ — New York Journal of Books on WRITTEN IN DEAD WAX

‘… entertaining second record-spinning mystery… Cartmel treats music and records seriously, plays his strange characters for laughs, and provides a bit of danger and some unexpected twists in this affectionate nod to the vagaries of rock stardom.’ — Publishers Weekly on THE RUN-OUT GROOVE

THE RUN-OUT GROOVE does a fantastic job of making its fictional history of music so fascinating and authentic that you’ll forget it isn’t all true… This a follow-up every bit the equal of its highly memorable predecessor, presenting a mystery you’ll be eager to solve and characters whose company you won’t want to leave. Written with infectious charm, the Vinyl Detective has more than proven he’s no one-hit-wonder.’ (9/10) — Alternative Magazine Online on THE RUN-OUT GROOVE

‘Cartmel at his best… an exciting and atmospheric mystery and a good addition to the Vinyl Detective’s casebook.’ — Blue Book Balloon on VICTORY DISC

‘This book was such a blast! It was a great addition to this hilarious series and I’m so impressed at how entertaining these books are.’ — Divine World of Books on VICTORY DISC

‘… an interesting and intriguing history for the series’ latest MacGuffin… the writing is sharp, funny and engaging throughout, and the main characters have never been more likeable… it’s wonderful; it’s a book filled with warmth and good humour – despite a touch of murder – that often feels like reacquainting yourself with old friends… The latest Vinyl Detective novel continues the series’ fine tradition of telling fictional stories that seem entirely plausible. There hasn’t been a dud note in the Vinyl Detective’s oeuvre to date and FLIP BACK is no exception; in fact, it might just be his greatest whodunnit yet.’ 9/10 — Alternative Magazine Online on FLIP BACK

Emily Rath’s NORTH IS THE NIGHT is Out Now in the UK!

Emily Rath‘s NORTH IS THE NIGHT is out today in the UK! Published by Arcadia, in hardcover, eBook, and audiobook (read by Lucy Doig and Maryam Ali), it’s the stand-alone first novel in Rath’s Tuonela duology. Here’s the synopsis…

With the dark, mythical magic of the Winternight trilogy, and the slow-burn romance of Spinning Silver, NORTH IS THE NIGHT is a feminist fantasy adventure that shows the power of female friendship and how love — both romantic and familial — can conquer even death itself.

In the harsh interior of the Finnish wilderness, best friends Aina and Siiri are inseparable despite their opposite natures: Aina is gentle and cautious while Siiri is headstrong and brave. But their friendship is put to the test when Aina is kidnapped by a death goddess and taken to the mythical underworld Tuonela.

Determined to save her friend, Siiri embarks on a dangerous journey north to seek out Väinämöinen, the only mystical shaman to travel to Tuonela and return alive. As the dark winter looms, Siiri uses all the strength she possesses to survive her journey, which is plagued by trappers, a band of roving wolves, and a cunning snow witch with her own quest for power. But finding Väinämöinen is only the beginning. Siiri must convince him to share his magic so she can sneak into Tuonela and save Aina.

In Tuonela, Aina is forced to play the sadistic games of Tuonetar, the cruel queen of the underworld, alongside other captured maidens. But Aina’s kindness allows her to make allies in the dark, harsh environment. She soon discovers that Tuoni, the god of death and king of Tuonela, is also a victim of Tuonetar’s spells that can only be broken when he remarries. To save him and the other girls, Aina offers herself as his bride.

As she spends more time in the underworld, Aina falls in love with Tuoni and must make a decision that will alter the course of her fate forever… not knowing her fearless friend is on the way and plotting a daring escape.
