V prvej pentalógii je hlavným hrdinom amberský princ Corwin, ktorý sa prebudí v nemocnici na Zemi a nevie, kto je a kde sa nachádza. Pri autonehode utrpel stratu pamäti, no našťastie stretne brata Randoma, ktorý mu otvorí cestu do Tieňov. Cez Vzor pod hladinou mora sa dostane do Amberu a zrazu si na všetko spomenie. Postupne odhaľuje, ako rôzne skupiny jeho kráľovských súrodencov kujú úklady a bojujú proti sebe, aby získali trón. Na korunovácii brata Erica príde Corwin o zrak a skončí vo väzení, odkiaľ ho vyslobodí čarodejník Dworkin. Po obnovení schopnosti vidieť sa zapojí do boja na obranu Amberu proti netvorom z čiernej cesty, v ktorom padne kráľ Eric, odhalí intrigy ďalšieho brata a pomôže na trón Randomovi. Predstavte si programátora v obleku, ako diskutuje so sfingou o komplikovanej hádanke, pomocou superpočítača cestuje medzi svetmi a na ruke má živú reťaz. Ak si teraz myslíte, že vás autor nemôže už ničím prekvapiť, ste na veľkom omyle. Znalci nenadarmo považujú Kroniky Amberu za kultové dielo fantasy.

Cyklus desiatich diel o fiktívnom svete Amber oprávnene možno nazvať vrcholným dielom a dnes už aj najlepšou klasikou v žánri fantasy literatúry. AMBER je opravdu jediný opravdu skutečný svět. Všechny ostatní jsou jen stíny. Nekonečný je svět Amberu vrhajícího stíny, jejichž velkolepé odlesky vytvářejí všechny ostatní světy, včetně toho, v kterém žijeme. Nekonečný jako velkolepá tajemství, před kterými se nám, smrtelníkům, tají dech. Čím však je ve skutečnosti? Z jakých rozmarů byl stvořen? Jak obrovská musí být síla, hrající si s mocnými světy jako se zrnky písku? První knihu „Devět princů Amberu“ otevírá příběh Corwina, nadčlověka se ztrátou paměti, který se probouzí na nemocničním lůžku po těžké autonehodě.
