Josh Winning’s BURN THE NEGATIVE Out in Three Weeks!

Josh Winning‘s highly-anticipated new horror/mystery masterpiece, BURN THE NEGATIVE is out in three weeks! Due to be published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons on July 11th, here’s the synopsis…

Thirty years hiding from her past.
Eight deaths still unexplained.
One haunted horror film.
Nowhere left to run.

Journalist Laura Warren is mid-flight to L.A. when she learns that the streaming series she’s about to report on is a remake of a ’90s horror flick. A cursed ’90s horror flick. The one she starred in—and has been running from her whole life.

As a child star, Laura was cast as the lead in The Guesthouse. She played Tammy Manners, the little girl with the terrifying gift to tell people how the Needle Man would kill them. But her big break was her last, as eight of her cast and crew mates died in mysterious ways, and the film became infamous—a cult classic of fictional horror that somehow summoned the real thing. Hoping to move on, Laura changed her name and her accent, dyed her hair, and moved across the Atlantic Ocean.

But some scripts don’t want to stay buried.

After landing, Laura finds a yellow dress like the one she wore in the movie. Then the words “She’s here” scratched into the wall in an actor’s trailer. And then people working on the series start dying. It’s all happening again, and Laura finds herself on the run with her sister and a jaded psychic, hoping to find answers—and to stay out of the Needle Man’s lethal reach.

An homage to slasher films with a fresh take on the true price of fame, Burn the Negative is a twisty thriller best read with the lights on.

Here are just a few of the great early reviews the novel has received so far…

‘A pulpy exploration of the monsters we make and a love letter to cult-classic frights.’Kirkus

‘Like the classic horror cinema it gleefully riffs on, Winning’s latest [BURN THE NEGATIVE] crackles with both dread and dazzle… Winning keeps readers guessing… while throwing out crafty winks and nods to well-known horror films and their makers, and driving his tale to a cinematically spectacular finale with several surprising plot twists. Horror fans should grab the popcorn for this bloody and entertaining romp.’Publishers Weekly

‘A spine-tingling, rip-roaring yarn that hearkens back to the thrills and chills of the best ’80s slasher horror. Hand this to readers who liked The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix, My Heart Is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones, or My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite.’Library Journal

BURN THE NEGATIVE is a creepy, twisty, compulsively readable haunted house of a book built from horror movies and our obsessive response to them. You’ll root for Laura and fear the Needle Man. Be sure to make the popcorn and dim the lights.’Paul Tremblay, author of A Head Full of Ghosts

Winning’s debut novel, THE SHADOW GLASS is also available, published by Titan Books in North America and in the UK.

Zeno at YALC!

YALC is this weekend, as part of the London Film & Comic Con. Zeno will be nicely represented by two of our agents — Stevie Finegan and Kristina Pérez, both of whom will be taking part in Agent 1-2-1s on Saturday, July 9th (1pm) in the Agent Arena.

In addition to Stevie and Kristina, two of our authors are also going to be attending!

Josh Winning, the author of the acclaimed debut THE SHADOW GLASS (Titan), will be taking part in the “Try the Fantasy” panel, which will ‘discuss the fun and fantastical world of fantasy YA fiction, and why we can’t get enough of these magical worlds.’

Here’s the synopsis for THE SHADOW GLASS

Jack Corman is failing at life.

Jobless, jaded and on the “wrong” side of thirty, he’s facing the threat of eviction from his London flat while reeling from the sudden death of his father, one-time film director Bob Corman. Back in the eighties, Bob poured his heart and soul into the creation of his 1986 puppet fantasy The Shadow Glass, a film Jack loved as a child, idolising its fox-like hero Dune.

But The Shadow Glass flopped on release, deemed too scary for kids and too weird for adults, and Bob became a laughing stock, losing himself to booze and self-pity. Now, the film represents everything Jack hated about his father, and he lives with the fear that he’ll end up a failure just like him.

In the wake of Bob’s death, Jack returns to his decaying home, a place creaking with movie memorabilia and painful memories. Then, during a freak thunderstorm, the puppets in the attic start talking. Tipped into a desperate real-world quest to save London from the more nefarious of his father’s creations, Jack teams up with excitable fanboy Toby and spiky studio executive Amelia to navigate the labyrinth of his father’s legacy while conjuring the hero within –– and igniting a Shadow Glass resurgence that could, finally, do his father proud.

Vincent Tirado, debut author of the acclaimed BURN DOWN, RISE UP (Sourcebooks Fire), will be taking part in the “History Repeating” panel, which will ‘explore the challenges and triumphs that come with bringing history back to life in new and exciting ways.’

Here’s the synopsis for BURN DOWN, RISE UP

DEFYING THE DRAGON, Taiwanese Edition Coming Soon!

We’re happy to report that Stephen Vines‘s DEFYING THE DRAGON has been acquired by Rive Gauche, to be published in Taiwan! The rights were sold by Jennifer Lee at the Grayhawk Agency, on behalf of Kristina Pérez of Zeno.

DEFYING THE DRAGON is already available in the UK and North America; published by Hurst Publishers and Oxford University Press, respectively. Here’s the synopsis…

Defying the Dragon tells a remarkable story of audacity: of how the people of Hong Kong challenged the PRC’s authority, just as its president reached the height of his powers. Is Xi’s China as unshakeable as it seems? What are its real interests in Hong Kong? Why are Beijing’s time-honoured means of control no longer working there? And where does this leave Hongkongers themselves?

Stephen Vines has lived in Hong Kong for over three decades. His book shrewdly unpacks the Hong Kong–China relationship and its wider significance — right up to the astonishing convergence of political turmoil and international crisis with Covid-19 and the 2020–21 crackdown.

Vividly describing the uprising from street level, Vines explains how and why it unfolded, and its global repercussions. Now, the international community is reassessing relations with Beijing, just as Hong Kong’s rebellion and China’s handling of the pandemic have exposed the regime’s weakness. In a crisis that has become existential all round, what lies ahead for Hong Kong, China and the world?

Here are just a few of the reviews the book has received so far…

‘A detailed chronicle of Hong Kong’s fight in the face of repression. Anyone who cares about Hong Kong and China will definitely want to read this book.’Joshua Wong, Hong Kong’s most famous democracy advocate

‘Written with honesty and integrity, [DEFYING THE DRAGON] chronicles a critical moment in Hong Kong’s history as the city prepares for an unclear future.’ — Post Magazine

‘A definitive, compelling account of a drama that has gripped the world. Vines interweaves frontline reporting, insights from key players and a local’s knowledge to chronicle Hong Kong’s defiant challenge to the might of Xi Jinping’s China.’Philip Sherwell, Asia correspondent, The Sunday Times

‘A superb book about Beijing’s ruthless and depressing efforts to stamp out Hong Kong’s freedoms, erode its rule of law and attack its identity as an open society. Vines, a brave and distinguished journalist, sets this sad story of a great international city within the brutal politics of the Chinese regime.’Lord Chris Patten, last British governor of Hong Kong

‘One of the most important stories of our times of the fight against authoritarian regimes. The best way to understand China is through the lens of Hong Kong’s struggles.’Nathan Law, leading democracy activist

‘A compelling narrative set against two major crises facing China — control of Hong Kong and unprecedented international pushback. With his signature dry wit and razor-sharp pen, Vines skewers Quislings, dysfunctional bureaucracies and self-interested elites, arguing that we shouldn’t bet against Hongkongers just yet.’Sharon Hom, Executive Director of Human Rights in China and Adjunct Professor, New York University

ICYMI: Josh Winning’s THE SHADOW GLASS Acquired by Titan Books!

In case you missed the news from Bookseller earlier in the week: Titan Books has acquired World English rights to Josh Winning‘s THE SHADOW GLASS from Zeno Associate Agent Kristina Pérez!

The novel is pitched as ‘Dark Crystal meets About a Boy in a race against the clock to stop bloodthirsty puppets from taking over the world’, and has been described as ‘a witty and loving tribute to the history of cinema, wrapped up in a latter-day coming-of-age story about the legacy of family’. It is due to be published in March 2022.

Titan Editor Craig Leyenaar had this to say about the novel:

‘I absolutely adored THE SHADOW GLASS from the first page, filled with nods and winks to classic fantasy films where the ordinary becomes the extraordinary and the everyman becomes the hero. Josh’s love for film shines through each page of this dark adventure that will have you cheering (or clapping if you were in a cinema) by the end.’

The author said of the deal: ‘Titan Books is the perfect geeky home for THE SHADOW GLASS. I’ve been a fan of their books for years and am thrilled to be joining their roster of fantastic authors.’

Congrats, Josh! We’ll share more information here as and when we have it (full synopsis, cover, etc.). Watch this space!
