THE FURTHEST STATION paperback out now in the UK!

The paperback edition of Ben Aaronovitch‘s first Peter Grant novella, THE FURTHEST STATION is out now! Published by Gollancz, here’s the synopsis…

Commuting ghosts, a kidnapping, and a superb new London mystery!

There’s something going bump on the Metropolitan line and Sergeant Jaget Kumar knows exactly who to call.

It’s PC Peter Grant’s speciality…

Only it’s more than going ‘bump’. Traumatised travellers have been reporting strange encounters on their morning commute, with strangely dressed people trying to deliver an urgent message. Stranger still, despite calling the police themselves, within a few minutes the commuters have already forgotten the encounter – making the follow up interviews rather difficult.

So with a little help from Abigail and Toby the ghost hunting dog, Peter and Jaget are heading out on a ghost hunting expedition.

Because finding the ghost and deciphering their urgent message might just be a matter of life and death.

Gollancz also publishes the Peter Grant novels — the seventh of which, LIES SLEEPING, is out later this year!

Aliette de Bodard’s THE TEA MASTER AND THE DETECTIVE out now!

Aliette de Bodard‘s latest novella, THE TEA MASTER AND THE DETECTIVE is out now! Published by Subterranean Press, here’s the synopsis…

Welcome to the Scattered Pearls Belt, a collection of ring habitats and orbitals ruled by exiled human scholars and powerful families, and held together by living mindships who carry people and freight between the stars. In this fluid society, human and mindship avatars mingle in corridors and in function rooms, and physical and virtual realities overlap, the appareance of environments easily modified and adapted to interlocutors or current mood.

A transport ship discharged from military service after a traumatic injury, The Shadow’s Child now ekes out a precarious living as a brewer of mind-altering drugs for the comfort of space-travellers. Meanwhile, abrasive and eccentric scholar Long Chau wants to find a corpse for a scientific study. When Long Chau walks into her office, The Shadow’s Child expects an unpleasant but easy assignment. When the corpse turns out to have been murdered, Long Chau feels compelled to investigate, dragging The  Shadow’s Child with her.

As they dig deep into the victim’s past, The Shadow’s Child realises that the investigation points to Long Chau’s own murky past–and, ultimately, to the dark and unbearable void that lies between the stars…

The novella has already been racking up some great reviews, too…

‘A science-fictional ode to Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, where the Holmes figure is a sharp and biting disgraced aristocratic scholar with a solid core of empathy, and the Watson-figure is a mindship with post-traumatic stress disorder from her war experiences… This is a measured, almost stately story, right up until a conclusion that explodes in fast-paced tension. It preserves the empathy and the intensity of the original Sherlockian stories, while being told in de Bodard’s sharp prose and modern style. The worldbuilding… sparkles. The characters have presence: they’re individual and compelling. And it ends it a way that recalls the original Holmes and Watson, while being perfectly appropriate to itself.’ Tor.com

‘De Bodard revisits her far-future Xuya universe setting with this gripping novella about damaged characters driven to search for the truth… De Bodard constructs a convincingly gritty setting and a pair of unique characters with provocative histories and compelling motivations. The story works as well as both science fiction and murder mystery, exploring a future where pride, guilt, and mercy are not solely the province of humans.’Publishers Weekly

‘De Bodard’s world building glitters, and her characters are deeply compelling… This is a really satisfying story, deeply invested in choosing to do the right thing – and in the importance of kindness. I strongly recommend it.’Locus

Aliette de Bodard’s latest series of novels, Dominion of the Fallen, is published in the UK by Gollancz and in the US by Roc Books.

Here are a couple of advance reviews…

‘De Bodard constructs a convincingly gritty setting and a pair of unique characters with provocative histories and compelling motivations. The story works as well as both science fiction and murder mystery, exploring a future where pride, guilt, and mercy are not solely the province of humans.’Publishers Weekly

‘THE TEA MASTER… is an astonishing Holmesian mystery, in which Holmes is a woman and Watson is a spaceship. It is everything I wanted it to be. Tea, space, and mysteries within mysteries.’Mary Robinette Kowal

Aliette is also the Nebula Award-winning author of the Dominion of the Fallen series, which is published by Gollancz in the UK, Roc Books in the US, and is available in various translations.

There’s a ghost on the line in Germany…

In May, DTV are due to publish Ben Aaronovitch‘s first Peter Grant novella in Germany! Published as GEISTER AUF DER METROPOLITAN LINE, here’s the synopsis…

THE FURTHEST STATION is published in the UK by Gollancz, and in the US by Subterranean Press. Here’s the English-language synopsis…

So with a little help from Abigail and Toby the ghost hunting dog, Peter and Jaget are heading out on a ghost hunting expedition.

Because finding the ghost and deciphering their urgent message might just be a matter of life and death.

Here are a few of the great reviews THE FURTHEST STATION has received so far…

‘Aaronvitch guarantees a thrilling read; his style and approach to world building are simply too tight and too accomplished not to. THE FURTHEST STATION is a strong example of compact and intense storytelling… We get some nice character development, especially via Peter’s cousin. She’s beginning to dabble in magic herself, which is a little like learning to juggle hand live hand grenades, and this provides a decent B-plot. THE FURTHEST STATION is short, but perfectly formed.’ Starburst

‘An excellent entry point to the Peter Grant series for newcomers who like their urban fantasies rendered with a light touch… The story is intriguing enough to pull readers along, and Peter’s dry humor will linger in the memory.’ Publishers Weekly

‘Though it be but little, this newest adventures of PC Peter Grant (technically book 5.7 in the Peter Grant/Rivers of London series) is fiercely entertaining; the endlessly imaginative Aaronovitch is in top form. Perhaps because there is so much intrigue, ghostly action and unique characterization packed into such a comparatively small space, the deft blend of supernatural adventure and police procedural is particularly impressive here, as Grant is called upon to use all the tools at his disposal, both the magical and the mundane.’ RT Book Reviews (Top Pick)

DTV has also published the six novels (to date) in the series. The novels are published in the UK by Gollancz, and in the US by Del Rey (1-3) and DAW Books (4-6).

Cover & Details: THE BEST OF IAN McDONALD

McDonald-BestOfIanMcDonald-Blog

Due out next month, PS Publishing has unveiled the cover and details for the upcoming THE BEST OF IAN McDONALD anthology! Here’s the synopsis…

Ian McDonald, the author of such landmark novels as Desolation Road, Chaga, River of Gods, and The Dervish House, has long been regarded as one of Britain’s finest SF writers. Just like those full-length works, his shorter fiction has commanded much admiration, and now, in this massive retrospective volume, the best McDonald tales are assembled in glittering array.

Represented here are all the phases of McDonald’s career: the poetic early retro-visions that in the late Eighties signalled the arrival of a marvellously fluent new stylistic voice; the virtuoso Nineties riffs on themes such as the Irish Troubles, nanotechnology, alternate history, and alien sexuality; the bold post-millennial ventures into the futuristic politics of Third World countries such as Kenya, India, and Brazil, as well as far afield to alien solar systems; and recent, dazzlingly conceived variations on the Arab Spring, the nature of superheroes, and Mars as pulp SF writers once fondly imagined it to be. The treasures are abundant, each presented in McDonald’s addictive, immersive prose — language at once elegantly timeless and edgily contemporary.

As the synopsis says, Ian McDonald is a highly-respected author. His most recent novel is LUNA: NEW MOON, which is published by Gollancz in the UK and Tor Books in the US. Gollancz publishes a number of his other novels in the UK. Open Road Media has also published a selection of Ian’s backlist in eBook.

Ian’s fans in the United States can also rejoice, for Subterranean Press has acquired some copies of the book for sale in North America.

Cover & Details: THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF LANGDON ST. IVES!

Blaylock-LSI-FurtherAdventuresOfLangsonStIves-Blog

This July, Subterranean Press is due to published James P. Blaylock‘s latest Langdon St. Ives anthology, THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF LANGDON ST. IVES! The anthology includes three classic adventures, a new novella and novelette, and more than forty illustrations by J. K. Potter, and will be available in a Limited Edition (only 200, signed and numbered), and a trade edition. Here’s the synopsis…

Langdon St. Ives, explorer, scientist, naturalist, and family man rarely has a restful day: adventure befalls him and a colorful cast of characters around every seemingly innocent turn.

In this chronicle, St. Ives descends beneath the quicksand of Morecambe Bay into a dark, unknown corner of the ocean littered with human bones and the castaway detritus of humanity in search of a strange, possible alien machine.

Madness at the Explorers Club in London and the disappearance of St. Ives’s wife Alice leads him to the underground lair of evil genius Dr. Ignacio Narbondo, who has undertaken to set the entirety of London into a lunatic frenzy.

A simple excursion to the West Indies is interrupted by bloodthirsty pirates whose depredations pale before the fury of the pagan god that erupts from beneath the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea.

An inexplicable cataract of water falling from a cloudless sky sets into motion a ballooning adventure in which St. Ives disappears through a hole in the sky.

And on a holiday in London, St. Ives investigates the insidious patent medicine salesman Diogenes, whose pills awaken strange longings and eons-old memories of man’s ascent from the fishes.

Subterranean Press publish a number of titles by James P. Blaylock, including three other Langdon St. Ives titles: THE EBB TIDE, THE AFFAIR OF THE CHALK CLIFFS and THE RING OF STONES.
