In Deutschland passiert etwas Seltsames… (THE OCTOBER MAN)

Yesterday, Gollancz announced that they have acquired Ben Aaronovitch‘s next Peter Grant novella! Gollancz will be publishing THE OCTOBER MAN in June 2019 in the UK. The novella will be published simultaneously in North America by Subterranean Press.

Here’s what Ben had to say about the upcoming book and deal:

‘So you thought Britain was the only country with cops who do magic? Think again. I’m very happy that Gollancz are willing to continue my foray into novellas. The series has always had lots of avid fans in Germany and I thought it was about time they had their own character and we learnt what their wizards have been up to.’

Here’s the synopsis…

Tobias Winter has been assigned to the Abteilung KDA — the Department for Complex and Unspecific Matters.

Despite the intriguing department name, as Winter explains, dealing with the strange and the supernatural is ‘actually 90% paperwork’. But this is a story about the other 10% of the job: the life-threatening danger part.

This is a tale about the Queen of the Harvest, the October Man, and the little-known time the vineyard around Trier started to eat people…

Winter may be P.C. Peter Grant’s German counterpart, but surviving this investigation is entirely down to him…

Here’s what Gollancz and Subterranean Press had to say about the deal…

‘The novella is becoming an increasingly successful and vibrant format in publishing and, as the success of his bestselling novella THE FURTHEST STATION showed, Ben Aaronovitch is gifted at writing them,’ said Gillian Redfearn, Publishing Director of Gollancz. ‘It’s fabulous to welcome a new detective to the Rivers of London universe.’

‘We’re delighted to be publishing signed, numbered and lettered editions of THE OCTOBER MAN, on the heels of our first novella with Ben, THE FURTHEST STATION,’  adds William Schafer, publisher of Subterranean Press. ‘With its unrivalled wit and rightfully beloved characters, the Rivers of London series is one of our favourites. We’re so pleased to be a part of its story.’

Gollancz has published all of the Peter Grant novels in the UK. Subterranean Press also published the first novella, THE FURTHEST STATION in North America. The novels are published in North America by Del Rey (1-3) and DAW Books (4-7). The series has been published widely in translation, with more editions on the horizon!

Next month, you can listen to WHO?

Next month — December 11th, to be exact — Blackstone Audio are due to publish an audio edition of Algis Budrys‘s classic sci-fi novel WHO? Here’s the synopsis…

Set against a backdrop of Cold War paranoia, this futuristic novel about identity and technology is “one of the unrecognized classics of SF” (Locus).

East and West have fused into separate superstates known as the Allied National Government (ANG) and the Soviet International Bloc (SIB). As the Cold War rages, brilliant scientist Lucas Martino works on a top-secret project known only as K-Eighty-eight that could alter the balance of world power. The project goes horribly awry at an Allied research facility near the Soviet border, and Martino is abducted.

After several months of tense negotiations, he returns severely injured from the lab explosion, and under pressure from America, undergoes extensive reconstructive surgery. He has a mechanical arm. His polished metal skull — a kind of craniofacial prosthesis — contains few discernible features. Several of his internal organs are artificial. While his fingerprints are identified as belonging to Lucas Martino, they could be the result of transplant. Is he the real Martino? Or a technologically altered impostor sent by America’s enemies for the purpose of spying and infiltration? Tasked with uncovering the truth, ANG Security Chief Shawn Rogers makes some shocking discoveries.

Narrated in chapters alternating between Rogers and Martino, Who? poses existential questions about the human condition.

Blackstone has also published Budrys’s ROGUE MOON and MICHAELMAS in audio.

Five of Budrys’s classic novels, and one collection, are published in eBook by Open Road Media.

The second issue in RIVERS OF LONDON: ACTION AT A DISTANCE is out today in print and digital! Written by Ben Aaronovitch and Andrew Cartmel, here’s the synopsis…

Wizarding cop Peter Grant delves deeper into the secret past of his mentor Nightingale.

That’s… a pretty short synopsis. In this seventh Rivers of London comic series, Peter Grant uncovers his mentor’s occult service during World War II! Series art is by Brian Williamson, and colours by Stefani Renne.

Featuring characters from Ben Aaronovitch’s best-selling, critically-acclaimed Peter Grant series, ACTION AT A DISTANCE #2 is published by Titan Comics. Titan has also published the first six series, all of which are now available in collected digital and paperback editions.

All of Ben’s Peter Grant novels and novellas are published in the UK by Gollancz. The series is published in North America by Del Rey (1-3), DAW Books (4-7) and Subterranean Press (novellas). The series has also been published in many different languages around the world.

In January, Brandon Sanderson unveils the SECRET HISTORY of MISTBORN!

On January 10th, 2019, Gollancz are due to publish Brandon Sanderson‘s latest Mistborn book in the UK! SECRET HISTORY is a companion novel to the fan-favourite, best-selling fantasy series. Here’s the synopsis…

Mistborn: Secret History is a companion story to the original Mistborn trilogy.

As such, it contains HUGE SPOILERS for the books Mistborn (The Final Empire), The Well of Ascension, and The Hero of Ages. It also contains very minor spoilers for the book The Bands of Mourning.

Mistborn: Secret History builds upon the characterization, events, and worldbuilding of the original trilogy. Reading it without that background will be a confusing process at best.

In short, this isn’t the place to start your journey into Mistborn (though if you have read the trilogy – but it has been a while – you should be just fine, so long as you remember the characters and the general plot of the books).

Saying anything more here risks revealing too much. Even knowledge of this story’s existence is, in a way, a spoiler.

There’s always another secret.

As you can see from that synopsis, this is not the place to start your Mistborn read, if you’ve never tried the series before. Fear not, though, because Gollancz has published all of the six novels in the series in the UK.

Gollancz also recently published Brandon’s latest novel, SKYWARD — the first in a new series that has been generating a lot of great reviews and accolades.

If you’re looking for a massive fantasy series to dive into, Gollancz has also published the first three novels in the author’s best-selling Stormlight Archive.

Zeno represents Brandon Sanderson in the UK and Commonwealth, on behalf of the JABberwocky Literary Agency in New York.

THE RELIC GUILD omnibus now available!

An eBook omnibus edition of Edward Cox‘s Relic Guild trilogy has been released by Gollancz! Here’s the synopsis…

Magic caused the war. Magic is forbidden. Magic will save us.

It was said the Labyrinth had once been the great meeting place, a sprawling city at the heart of an endless maze where a million humans hosted the Houses of the Aelfir. The Aelfir who had brought trade and riches, and a future full of promise. But when the Thaumaturgists, overlords of human and Aelfir alike, went to war, everything was ruined and the Labyrinth became an abandoned forbidden zone, where humans were trapped behind boundary walls 100 feet high.

Now the Aelfir are a distant memory and the Thaumaturgists have faded into myth. Young Clara struggles to survive in a dangerous and dysfunctional city, where eyes are keen, nights are long, and the use of magic is punishable by death. She hides in the shadows, fearful that someone will discover she is touched by magic. She knows her days are numbered. But when a strange man named Fabian Moor returns to the Labyrinth, Clara learns that magic serves a higher purpose and that some myths are much more deadly in the flesh.

The only people Clara can trust are the Relic Guild, a secret band of magickers sworn to protect the Labyrinth. But the Relic Guild are now too few. To truly defeat their old nemesis Moor, mightier help will be required. To save the Labyrinth — and the lives of one million humans — Clara and the Relic Guild must find a way to contact the worlds beyond their walls.

The trilogy includes the novels: THE RELIC GUILD, THE CATHEDRAL OF KNOWN THINGS and THE WATCHER OF DEAD TIME.

Here are just some of the reviews the series has received…

‘Ed Cox has created a lush, detailed world while also hinting at a larger backstory that will be revealed in volumes to come’SFX

‘An exiting blend of steampunk, fantasy, horror and pulp adventure… an intriguing, original and enjoying book’ — Starburst

‘A terrific debut novel, with plenty of scope for expansion and some really good world-building. Most importantly, lots of fun’ — Joanne M Harris, author of Gospel of Loki

WAKE UP AND DREAM in digital…

Ian R. MacLeod‘s modern classic WAKE UP AND DREAM is now available in eBook via the JABberwocky eBook Program! Here’s the synopsis…

All failed actor and unlicensed private eye Clark Gable has to do is impersonate a wealthy scriptwriter for a few hours, and sign a contract for the biopic of the inventor of a device which has transformed the world of entertainment. What could go wrong? True, he’s seeing ghosts, but so’s everyone else these days, at least when they go to the Feelies. And Europe is devastated by war, and America in sleep-walking toward Fascism. But what’s that got to do with him? A great deal, it turns out, as he stumbles into a world of glamour, danger, preternatural forces and political intrigue.

A dazzling blend of mystery, fantasy and history, and by turns witty, eerie and romantic, Wake Up and Dream is film noir with Technicolor wraiths.

JABberwocky has also published Ian’s THE SUMMER ISLES, SONG OF TIME, THE GREAT WHEEL and RED SNOW in eBook, which are available everywhere now!

Ian McDonald’s ARES EXPRESS is out now in Italy!

Zone 42 has published the Italian edition of Ian McDonald‘s ARES EXPRESS! Here’s the synopsis…

The first novel in the series, DESOLATION ROAD, is also published by Zone 42 in Italy.

Both DESOLATION ROAD and ARES EXPRESS are available as eBooks via the JABberwocky eBook Program. Here are just a few of the reviews the series has received so far…

‘McDonald’s fantastic Mars is vividly detailed and owes much to Bradbury’s Martian stories… entirely worthy of its rightly lauded predecessor.’ Publishers Weekly on ARES EXPRESS

‘A phantasmagoria of nuclear locomotives and wild Martian awesomeness. It’s a definite must-read… McDonald is furthermore an extraordinary stylist. His prose is clear and lucid, and at once both beautiful and playful. There is an inescapable sense that McDonald enjoys playing with words, building prose like intricate clocks, which can persist wholly on their beauty, regardless of their subject.’ io9 on ARES EXPRESS

ARES EXPRESS is a long, adventure-filled, extravagantly colourful, often funny, quite moving, highly imaginative, excellently written, story, set on a glorious Mars… might be the most fun [novel of the year]. I loved it wholeheartedly’ SF Site

‘Ian McDonald’s DESOLATION ROAD is one of my most personally influential novels. It’s an epic tale of the terraforming of Mars, whose sweep captures the birth and death of mythologies, economics, art, revolution, politics… Desolation Road pays homage to David Byrne’s Catherine Wheel, to Ray Bradbury’s entire canon and to Jack Vance, blending all these disparate creators in a way that surprises, delights, then surprises and delights again… Pyr Books has done us all the service of bringing this remarkable volume back into print after too long a hiatus.’ — Cory Doctorow (Boing Boing)

‘There’s a fair bit of science fiction that feels like fantasy, and vice versa, but DESOLATION ROAD is the only book I know that holds this particular balance… It was McDonald’s first novel, it absolutely bowled me over when it came out, and while I have read everything he’s published since, and admire all of it and like most of it, this remains my favourite of his books because it’s so unusual. It’s also some of the most beautiful prose imaginable… If you ever want to demonstrate how different science fiction can be, what an incredible range and sweep of things are published with a little spaceship on the spine, DESOLATION ROAD is a shining datapoint, because it isn’t like anything else and yet it is coming from a knowledge of what the genre can do and can be and making something new out of it.’ — Jo Walton (Tor.com)

Listen to a tale of the ROGUE MOON…

A new audiobook edition of Algis Budrys‘s ROGUE MOON is out now! Published by Blackstone Publishing, here’s the synopsis…

The ideal candidate won’t go insane, even as he feels the end approaching. And now they think they’ve found their man.

Al Barker has already stared into the face of death — he can handle it again. But Barker won’t merely have to endure the trauma of dying: he will have to endure it over and over again — mentally linked to an ongoing series of duplicates of himself created and sent to the Moon by matter transmission — until the artifact reveals its secret.

MOON OVER Romania…

MOON OVER SOHO, the second novel in Ben Aaronovitch‘s critically-acclaimed, best-selling Peter Grant series, is coming soon in Romania! Due to be published by Editura Herg Benet as SOHO ÎN LUMINA LUNII in November, the cover’s above and here’s the synopsis…

Herg Benet have also published the first book in the series, RIVERS OF LONDON, as RÂURILE DIN LONDRA.

MOON OVER SOHO is published in the UK by Gollancz, and in the US by Del Rey, and widely in translation. Here’s the English-language synopsis…

Peter Grant is not just a lowly Detective Constable, he’s also apprenticed to the last wizard in Britain: policing will never be the same again!

I was my dad’s vinyl-wallah: I changed his records while he lounged around drinking tea, and that’s how I know my Argo from my Tempo. And it’s why, when Dr Walid called me to the morgue to listen to a corpse, I recognised the tune it was playing. Something violently supernatural had happened to the victim, strong enough to leave its imprint like a wax cylinder recording. Cyrus Wilkinson, part-time jazz saxophonist and full-time accountant, had apparently dropped dead of a heart attack just after finishing a gig in a Soho jazz club. He wasn’t the first.

No one was going to let me exhume corpses to see if they were playing my tune, so it was back to old-fashioned legwork, starting in Soho, the heart of the scene. I didn’t trust the lovely Simone, Cyrus’ ex-lover, professional jazz kitten and as inviting as a Rubens’ portrait, but I needed her help: there were monsters stalking Soho, creatures feeding off that special gift that separates the great musician from someone who can raise a decent tune. What they take is beauty. What they leave behind is sickness, failure and broken lives.

And as I hunted them, my investigation got tangled up in another story: a brilliant trumpet player, Richard ‘Lord’ Grant — my father — who managed to destroy his own career, twice. That’s the thing about policing: most of the time you’re doing it to maintain public order. Occasionally you’re doing it for justice. And maybe once in a career, you’re doing it for revenge.

Here, also, are some of the various translation covers…

And here are just a handful of the reviews the novel has received since it was first published…

‘The excitement and entertainment hasn’t stopped in the slightest…  this book once again blew my mind, and kept me reading well into the late night/early morning. You needn’t pick up RIVERS OF LONDON, Aaronovitch’s first in this series, but you’d regret it by the time you got to the end of MOON OVER SOHO and found out how good it was.’ Fantasy Book Review

‘… as funny as it is fantastic… [The plot] hops along happily to a toe-tapping time signature, with a sweet solo here and an awesome cacophony of noise there… vast amounts of fun…’ Speculative Scotsman

MOON OVER SOHO is very good. Ben Aaronovitch continues the successful formula of RIVERS OF LONDON in bringing to the surface the endearing minutae of a city that he clearly adores. He also demonstrates the “real world” problems of a ritual magician trying to have some sort of ‘normal’ life… Grant continues to observe his world(s) in a detached way – a narrative voice that lends itself well to dry humor (and fits less neatly with the book’s few over-the-top action scenes). Mr. Aaronovitch is, in short, writing the best contemporary occult detective series on the shelf today, and that’s by a substantial margin.’ Pornokitsch

‘A fantastic follow-up to MIDNIGHT RIOT. Aaronovitch does a great job of bringing even minor characters to life. One of Grant’s fellow cops, Leslie, plays a minor role throughout the story – but her involvement is an emotional cornerstone that brings a surprisingly bittersweet element into play… MOON OVER SOHO is an excellent addition to the paranormal police genre.’ Examiner

Coming Soon: Roger Zelazny’s THIS IMMORTAL in France

Roger Zelazny‘s classic novel THIS IMMORTAL (his first published) is getting a new French edition! Published next week by Helios as TOI L’IMMORTEL, here’s the synopsis…

THIS IMMORTAL was first published in 1966, and won the Hugo Award for Best Novel (1966), Geffen Award for Best Translated Science Fiction Book (2009), and the Seiun Award 星雲賞 for Best Foreign Language Novel of the Year (1976). Here’s the English-language synopsis…

Conrad Nomikos has a long, rich personal history that he’d rather not talk about. And, as Arts Commissioner, he’s been given a job he’d rather not do. Escorting an alien grandee on a guided tour of the shattered remains of Earth is not something he relishes — especially when it is apparent that this places him at the center of high-level intrigue that has some bearing on the future of Earth itself!
